Job Description

The Office of Innovation and Entrepreneurship (OIE) at Duke-NUS Medical School is responsible for protecting and commercialising inventions made by Duke-NUS researchers, and managing collaborations and relationships with other organisations that may result in new products or services that impact patients and communities to build an ecosystem of entrepreneurship at the SingHealth Duke-NUS Academic Medical Centre. The Contracts and Industry Engagement Department (CIE) is responsible for contract negotiation with third parties and management of external relationships with other research organisations or commercial entities that might be sponsoring specific research areas.

 

OIE is actively seeking an Associate Director to report to the Head of CIE. The roles and responsibilities will include but are not limited to the following: -

 

  • Collaborate with internal offices at Duke-NUS and NUS, as necessary, to establish efficient work processes for initiating and managing contractual relationships across research, commercialisation, education, and other functional areas within the school.
  • Facilitate the preparation and review of academic and industry collaborative agreements, including confidentiality agreements, research collaboration agreements, MOUs, and other necessary legal documents to facilitate interactions between researchers and third parties, as well as public sector organisations, in alignment with NUS' policies.
  • Provide timely and accurate general legal advice to Duke-NUS’ internal offices on a wide range of legal issues affecting the organisation.
  • Create and refine contracting templates and additional processes and procedures as needed to optimise functions and streamline processes.
  • Contribute to the formulation of strategies and execution of external relationships, as well as the development of new initiatives and programmes that further the objectives and activities of OIE and Duke-NUS.
  • Perform other duties related to the aforementioned tasks or as assigned by the Department.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in law with a minimum of 10 to 12 years of relevant work experience in negotiating and drafting various legal agreements, with at least 6 years in a leadership related role.
  • Proven track record in managing contracts within the biomedical/biotechnology research and development sector, with experience in both industry and academic settings. Prior involvement with the Ministry of Health and other local universities would be advantageous.
  • Proactive in co-developing and implementing organisational strategies, with a focus on achieving tangible results and outcomes.
  • Able to navigate complex business and intra-organisational issues while maintaining a composed and level-headed demeanor.
  • Possess strong analytical skills coupled with effective problem-solving abilities, alongside impeccable attention to details for precise and professional contract delivery and turnaround times.
  • Have excellent organisational and communication skills, enabling effective multitasking and the ability to work autonomously or collaboratively within teams. Additionally, adept at engaging with internal and external stakeholders across all organisational levels.
  • Proficiency in MS Office applications, particularly within the Microsoft environment and the MS Office suite of products, is essential.
