Job Description

Duke-NUS Medical School (“Duke-NUS”) is conducting an international search for an experienced, dynamic and creative leader for its Centre for Technology Development (“CTeD”). As a senior member of the innovation team, the Director of CTeD is responsible for promoting strategic innovation and entrepreneurship opportunities for faculty and staff, and the commercialization of their work.

 

Duke-NUS, Singapore’s only graduate-entry medical school was established as a landmark collaboration between two world-ranking institutions of higher education – Duke University and National University of Singapore. Duke-NUS provides innovative education and impactful research to enhance the practice of medicine in Singapore and beyond. Through its strategic partnership with Singapore Health Services (“SingHealth”) which includes Singapore General Hospital, the School is able to leverage on its join capabilities and infrastructure to develop outstanding clinical education programmes and cutting edge research collaborations that translate fundamental sciences into better health outcomes.

 

Duke-NUS has an active technology commercialisation programme managed by CTeD under the Office of Innovation and Entrepreneurship (“OIE”), which incubates ideas from invention to commercialization, and thereby creates value by accelerating game-changing innovation. The Director will be a highly visible professional in Singapore’s sophisticated and mature life sciences sector. Singapore’s most significant biotech licensing deals have been negotiated by CTeD and its collaborators at the SingHealth Duke-NUS Academic Medical Centre (“AMC”).

Qualifications

The successful candidate will:

  •  Lead the development of a world-class commercialisation hub at SingHealth Duke-NUS AMC with the Vice Dean of OIE and other internal and external collaborators.
  •  Lead CTeD’s team of technology managers, commercialisation professionals, and external consultants and contractors, responsible for evaluating, protecting, commercialising, managing and monitoring Duke-NUS’ technologies and/or projects.
  •  Create and scale programmes for engaging internal and external stakeholders, including the Duke-NUS New Ventures Programme.
  •  Identify, assess, and protect commercially-viable innovation assets from across the breadth of research in Duke-NUS.
  •  Develop commercialisation plans, obtain market intelligence, create funding strategies, and provide startup or licensing support for technologies with commercial potential.
  •  Market Duke-NUS licensing, investment and strategic partnership opportunities, engage in business development with entrepreneurs, investors and corporations, and negotiate and execute licensing, strategic collaboration and other transactions.
  • Develop and implement standard operating procedures and activities that ensure all activities are conducted in a manner that is consistent with the mission of and to the benefit of Duke-NUS, the SingHealth Duke-NUS AMC, and Singapore.
  • Manage reporting and communications on commercialisation for internal and external reporting.
  • Create strategic relationships with other universities, government research institutions, non-profit organizations, and companies to co-develop commercialisation projects and programmes.
  • Perform other duties as may be required.

 

Requirements

  • Master’s Degree in Biomedical Sciences, Business Management or equivalent. A PhD will be advantageous but can be substituted with experience in the field.
  • Possess qualifications or demonstrable experience in commercialisation; certification as a licensing professional (or willingness to seek such certification) will be advantageous.
  • Minimum 12 to 15 years of experience in technology transfer/development with demonstrable leadership in health/life science commercialisation, business development, commercial partnership and licensing negotiations.
  • Proven credentials in building and leading effective teams.
  • Prior work experience in an academic environment and/or innovation ecosystem would be advantageous. 
  • Comfortable with the nimble and ambiguous environment of an entrepreneur.
  • Possess strong operational, budget management, project management and analytical skills, with excellent written and oral communication skills.
