Research Assistant (OR/NBD/VP5)

Date: 13 Apr 2024

Location: DUKE-NUS MEDICAL SCHOOL, Outram Campus, SG

Company: National University of Singapore

Job Description

The Signature Research Programme in Neuroscience and Behavioural Disorders (NBD) is focused on understanding the structure and function of the nervous system, and the neural mechanisms underlying human neurological, psychiatric and ophthalmological disorders. NBD is one of the five Signature Research Programmes at Duke-NUS Medical School, focused on understanding the structure and function of the nervous system, and the neural mechanisms underlying human neurological, psychiatric and eye disorders.

The Translational Neuroscience Group led by Professor Vincenzo De Paola (https://www.duke-nus.edu.sg/nbd/the-team/faculty-members/details/Detail/de-paola-vincenzo) at Duke-NUS Medical School is looking for Research Assistant / Research Assistant (Senior).

The team aims to illuminate the mechanisms of human cortical circuit wiring and dysfunction. The ultimate aim is to use this knowledge to help design new treatment strategies for both neurodegenerative (e.g. dementia) and neuropsychiatric conditions (e.g. autism), and to enhance the brain regenerative potential.

The group uses a multidisciplinary approach at the interface between neuroscience (live imaging, neuroanatomy, electrophysiology, optogenetics, organotypic cultures), genetics (snRNAseq), human stem cell and tissue biology (human iPSC-derived neurons transplanted in the mouse brain) and high-resolution optical imaging (structural and functional multiphoton microscopy).

The selected candidate will perform a variety of research activities under the supervision of the Principal Investigator (PI), including but not limited to the following: -

  • Provide laboratory operational assistance to the PI, i.e., day-to-day coordination and running of the laboratory including supervisory responsibilities for laboratory staff and students.
  • Assist with general upkeep of laboratory needs, maintain safety protocols, provide technical support and establish work procedures to ongoing research projects.
  • Perform tasks and support all aspects of the research project (microscopy, human cell cultures, molecular biology, brain tissue processing, etc.).
  • Conduct accurate monitoring, documenting and reporting of experimental results and/or research findings.
  • Assist researchers in programming, data analysis and literature review in various research projects.
  • Perform any other duties that commensurate with the position.

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in cell and molecular biology or other related disciplines with at least 2 years of research laboratory experience.
  • Possess excellent record keeping, organisational and problem-solving skills.
  • Prior research experience in neuroscience and with the experimental approaches would be advantageous.
  • Have an open, flexible and positive approach to working in a constantly changing environment.
  • Able to effectively multi-task and perform well under pressure, both independently and as part of a team.
  • Prioritise and manage multiple initiatives/projects simultaneously, and also ensure that the laboratory runs in an efficient manner.

Applicants should send in a single PDF their CV a cover letter clearly linking their track record to the proposed research in our team, as well as arrange to have at least two confidential letters of reference sent by referees to this email address vincenzo.depaola@duke-nus.edu.sg. Positions will remain open until filled.

We appreciate all applications, but only shortlisted candidates will be contacted for further evaluation
