Research Fellow (OOR/CCB/JB)
Date: 13 Sep 2024
Location: DUKE-NUS MEDICAL SCHOOL, Outram Campus, SG
Company: National University of Singapore
Job Description
The Duke-NUS Centre for Computational Biology provides a nucleus for expertise in computational biology to study key questions in biomedical research. The laboratory of Assoc Prof Jacques Behmoaras focuses on understanding novel molecular and cellular mechanisms of ageing and metabolic disease.
Ageing is becoming a global concern with multi-organ manifestations, including chronic, low-grade inflammation. Metabolic diseases share similarities in basic mechanisms of ageing. A system-level understanding of ageing and metabolic disease based on immunity and inflammation (‘inflammaging’) and senescence will be critical to achieve timely and impactful translation as well as in accelerating drug discovery. This project is on a growing trajectory and benefits from existing computational and experimental resources.
We are looking for a dynamic, enthusiastic, and resourceful Research Fellow with knowledge and research skills in the area of ageing, metabolic disease, metabolism-related research, chronic inflammatory disease, and immunity/inflammation, to join the team.
The selected candidate will perform a variety of research activities within the overall scope of a research project under the supervision of the Principal Investigator and/or his designate, including but not limited to the following:
- Independently carry out the design and execution of experimental research required by the research component of the project.
- Develop connections with local (in particular within the different Signature Research Programmes in Duke NUS) and international researchers for collaboration work.
- Write and review research papers, present research outcomes, conceptualise new ideas and develop plans for independent research which could have a considerable influence and impact on the relevant field attracting research funding.
- Work closely with computational biologists in the Centre for Computational Biology to acquire some basic knowledge in the area of bioinformatics.
- Keep updated with worldwide literature related to the project.
- Provide support for external grant/protocol development, study design and management of research activities.
- Contribute to occasional educational / instructional activities and project management.
- Provide guidance and mentorship to undergraduate / medical students and research assistants.
- Maintain optimal experiment progress in the laboratory or in the research work undertaken.
- Perform other related duties incidental to the work described therein.
Job Requirements
- PhD and/or post-graduate medical degree with relevant research experience and training. Candidates with higher credentials may be considered for Senior Research Fellow appointment.
- Scientific background relevant to the research area and laboratory experimental skills.
- Integration (where applicable) of wet-lab techniques with high-throughput technologies such as transcriptomics or proteomics.
- Champion in reproducibility of findings and in scientific rigour applied to experimental setup.
- An understanding of human pathology and laboratory expertise in model organisms and rigorous data integration/interpretation.
- Proven track record in the form of prestigious and externally cited publications.
- Demonstrated capability of research independence progressively.
- Strong writing and critical thinking skills, as well as good communication and presentation skills.
- A team player who can prioritise, multi-task and work collaboratively in a diverse workforce.
We regret that only shortlisted candidates will be notified.
