Research Fellow (OR/NBD/CM2)

Date: 21-Mar-2023

Location: DUKE-NUS MEDICAL SCHOOL, Outram Campus, SG

Company: National University of Singapore

Job Description

The Neuroscience and Behavioural Disorders (NBD) Programme is focused on understanding the structure and function of the nervous system, and the neural mechanisms underlying human neurological, psychiatric and ophthalmological disorders.

The laboratory of Dr. Mian Cao in the NBD Programme at Duke-NUS Medical School (Duke-NUS) in Singapore seeks 1-2 postdoctoral fellows with strong enthusiasm and interest in neurodegeneration research, particularly in molecular and cellular mechanisms of Parkinson’s disease (PD).

PD is the second most common neurodegenerative disorder. Genetic studies have recently identified several PD-linked proteins that are involved in endocytic trafficking at the synapse, suggesting impaired synaptic transmission is an early feature of PD. The long-term goal of our laboratory is to elucidate the pathogenic mechanisms of PD and reveal potential therapeutic targets for the treatment of PD. Specifically, we will investigate how the impaired synaptic membrane trafficking results in selective neurodegeneration of dopaminergic neurons in PD. We will also study the potential synergistic function of several PD-linked proteins on synaptic endocytic pathway.  We will perform biochemical, cell biological, genetic, physiological, pathological and behavioral experiments to address these questions using the PD mouse models and iPSC derived human patient neurons.

In addition to PD, we are also interested in investigating the pathogenic mechanisms of the impaired membrane/endocytic trafficking in other neurological disorders such as Alzheimer’s Disease, Down syndrome and epilepsy.

We are a part of the NBD, which is one of five Signature Research Programmes at Duke-NUS. It has its home in a modern facility adjacent to the Singapore General Hospital and maintains strong basic, translational and clinical research partnerships throughout Singapore, including the National Neuroscience Institute. We will provide exciting opportunities and vibrant atmospheres as well as state-of-arts core facilities. We also offer a highly attractive remuneration package including competitive salary and fringe benefits. Excited and motivated individuals are all encouraged to apply.

The selected candidate will perform a variety of research activities which include planning, organising and conducting research studies within the overall scope of a research project under the supervision of the Principal Investigator or his/her designate, including but not limited to the following: -

  • Independently carry out the design and execution of experimental research required by the research component of the project.
  • Develop connections with local and international researchers for collaboration work.
  • Provide guidance and mentorship to undergraduate / medical students and research assistants.
  • Write and review research papers, present research outcomes, conceptualise new ideas and develop plans for independent research which could have a considerable influence and impact on the relevant field attracting research funding.

Job Requirements

  • PhD and/or MD degree in neuroscience, biological sciences or a related field.
  • Experience with mouse genetics/behaviors, electrophysiology, viral vectors, stereotaxic surgery and molecular/cellular neuroscience is desirable.
  • Self-motivated and well-organized with good written and oral communication and technical skills.
  • Able to work independently and collaborate effectively in an interdisciplinary team.

Interested candidates should submit by email a single PDF file containing the cover letter describing research experiences and interests, CV, and contact information of three references to: mian.cao@duke-nus.edu.sg. Positions will remain open until filled. We regret that only shortlisted candidates will be notified.
