Job Description

The Cardiovascular and Metabolic Disorders (CVMD) Programme houses state-of-the-art technologies for profiling mitochondrial function and metabolic adaptations in human patients and other model organisms, and undertakes translational and clinical research in cardiovascular and metabolic disorders.

We are looking for a Research Assistant to join Prof Yen’s laboratory within CVMD. The research focuses in the area of thyroid hormone action, metabolically active natural compounds, autophagy, mitochondrial function, and their dysregulation in metabolic liver diseases, particularly non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), the most prevalent chronic liver disease in the world. Prof. Yen’s laboratory aims to develop novel intervention strategies and/or therapeutic agents for NAFLD.

The selected candidate will perform a variety of research activities within the overall scope of the research project, including but not limited to the following:

  • Perform molecular biology experiments (e.g. PCR, western blotting).
  • Animal handling which includes special diet and water feeing, injection, follow up in vivo assessment of mice, and dissection. 
  • Perform cell culture experiments (e.g. cell line maintaining, treatment, protein or RNA sample harvesting).
  • Carry out laboratory experiments according to SOPs.
  • Ensure accurate monitoring, documenting of laboratory records (MSDS, chemical, biohazard), and reporting of experimental results and research findings.
  • Assist in procurement and inventory of equipment, chemicals, reagents, and consumables.
  • Assist with general upkeep of laboratory needs, maintain safety protocols, provide technical support and establish work procedures to ongoing research projects.
  • Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Sciences/Life Sciences or equivalent with relevant research experience and training.
  • Entry level candidates, with strong motivation to learn and achieve, may also be considered.
  • Knowledge of the scientific background relevant to the research area.
  • Strong team player who is open-minded, energetic, highly motivated and can work collaboratively in an interdisciplinary team and diverse workforce.
  • Good communication skills will be valued.
