Job Description

The Neuroscience and Behavioural Disorders (NBD) Programme is focused on understanding the structure and function of the nervous system, and the neural mechanisms underlying human neurological, psychiatric and ophthalmological disorders.

A Research Assistant or Research Associate position is available in the newly established Translational Neuroscience Group led by the Principal Investigator Professor Vincenzo De Paola (https://www.depaolalab.com). The team aims to illuminate the mechanisms of human cortical circuit wiring and dysfunction. The ultimate aim is to use this knowledge to help design new treatment strategies for both neurodegenerative (e.g. dementia) and neuropsychiatric conditions (e.g. autism and schizophrenia), and to enhance the brain regenerative potential.

The group uses a multidisciplinary approach at the interface between neuroscience (neuroanatomy, electrophysiology, optogenetics, organotypic cultures), genetics (genomics, snRNAseq), human stem cell and tissue biology (human iPSC-derived neurons transplanted in the mouse brain) and high-resolution optical imaging (structural and functional multiphoton microscopy).

The selected candidate will perform a variety of research activities which include planning, organising and conducting research studies within the overall scope of a research project under the supervision of the Principal Investigator or his/her designate, including but not limited to the following: -

  • Perform tasks and support all aspects of the research project.
  • Conduct accurate monitoring, documenting and reporting of experimental results and/or research findings.
  • Assist researchers in experimental work (microscopy, human cell cultures, molecular biology, brain tissue processing, etc.), programming, data analysis and literature review in various research projects.
  • Contribute to project management, presentations and publications of research work.
  • Assist with general upkeep of laboratory needs, maintain safety protocols, provide technical support and establish work procedures to ongoing research projects.
  • Perform other related duties incidental to the work described therein.

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in cell and molecular biology or related discipline with 1 to 2 years of research laboratory experience in cell and/or molecular biology or neuroscience.
  • Prior programming, statistical analysis, image analysis, animal work, and/or laboratory management experience would be advantageous.
  • Knowledge of the scientific background relevant to the research area would be advantageous.
  • Possess strong interpersonal communications skills with excellent written, oral communication and computer skills.
  • Meticulous, well-organised and have good time management to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • A team player who is open-minded, energetic, highly motivated and able to prioritise, multi-task and work collaboratively in a diverse workforce.

The applicant should include a cover letter and references.
