Job Description

The Signature Research Programme in Emerging Infectious Diseases (EID) aims to pioneer the development and discovery of new and more effective methods for the treatment, prevention and control of new and emerging pathogens. The key outcome of the research will be the early identification of new pathogens, out of which new diagnostic tests, treatments and control strategies will be developed.

A full-time Research Assistant / Research Assistant (Senior) position is available at the Laboratory of Virus Evolution. The laboratory studies the rapid evolution of important respiratory RNA viruses including influenza, para-influenza and coronavirus. The candidate will perform routine experiments such as cell culture, virus infection, qPCR, ELISA and NGS library preparations. The candidate will also perform infection experiments using mouse model and is expected to perform a variety of research activities under the supervision of the Principal Investigator or his/her designate. The main duties and responsibilities will include but not limited to the following: -

  • Assist with the design and execution of high precision in vitro and in vivo experiments
  • Perform virological experiments such as virus culture, sequencing and cell culture kinetics .
  • Perform mice immunization and growth kinetics experiments, organ harvest, immunohistochemistry on frozen and paraffin tissue sections.
  • Assist with laboratory management including ethics approvals, procurement, sample inventories and safety documents.
  • Evaluate and interpret collected data and prepare oral presentations or written reports/ scientific manuscripts/literature for publication.
  • Perform other related duties incidental to the work described therein.

Job Requirements

  • Master’s or Bachelor’s Degree in Microbiology, Biotechnology, Immunology or other related fields.
  • Prior experience on experimental techniques with RNA viruses would be advantageous.
  • Prior experience with mice handling is preferred.
  • Prior knowledge of using statistical packages would be advantageous
  • Possess excellent quantitative, analytical and organisational skills.
  • A strong team player who is open-minded, energetic, highly motivated and can work collaboratively in an interdisciplinary team and diverse workforce
