Job Description

We are looking for a collaborative, dynamic and self-motivated Research Fellow to work with a multidisciplinary group of scientists to understand the progression of neurodegenerative diseases through next generation sequencing and spatial profiling techniques.

The successful candidate will be jointly hired by Dr. John Ouyang and Assistant Professor Alfred Sun, and will be based within the Centre for Computational Biology (CCB), Duke-NUS. The successful candidate will apply cutting-edge deep learning and systems genetics approaches on single-cell and spatial omics profiling of brain organoids/tissues in the context of neurodegenerative diseases i.e. Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s.

The selected candidate will perform a variety of research activities under the supervision of the Principal Investigator, including but not limited to the following: -

  • Independently carry out computational and bioinformatics analysis for single-cell and spatial transcriptomics as well as next generation sequencing studies.
  • Develop new computational tools through the application of machine learning / deep learning on single-cell and spatial transcriptomics data.
  • Apply machine learning / deep learning algorithms to single-cell / bulk transcriptomic data to identify dysregulated genes and pathways in neurodegenerative diseases.
  • Design and plan sequencing experiments to ensure proper downstream analysis.
  • Analyse and process data from high-throughput imaging studies.
  • Conceptualise new ideas and develop plans for independent research in applying machine learning to single-cell genomics data.
  • Write and review research papers, present research outcomes and develop connections with local and international researchers for collaboration work.
  • Contribute to project management and provide guidance to junior researchers as well as undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Job Requirements

  • PhD in Bioinformatics/Computational Biology or a related scientific area with demonstrated bioinformatics and genetics expertise and experience.
  • Experience with statistical modelling and analysis of large-scale single-cell / spatial transcriptomics data.
  • Experience with using computational tools written in R / Python etc and applying machine learning and deep learning algorithms.
  • Demonstrated very good knowledge, skills and expertise, with potential to achieve research excellence.
  • Proven track record in the form of high impact publications. 
  • A team player who is able to prioritise, multi-task and work collaboratively in a diverse workforce.
