Research Fellow (OR/CVR/WZX)

Date: 21-Jan-2022

Location: Outram Campus, SG

Company: National University of Singapore

Job Description

The Centre for Vision Research brings together the synergies of strength and capabilities as well as expertise in ophthalmology and vision sciences research within the SingHealth Duke-NUS Academic Medical Centre. It paves the way for the creation of an all-encompassing amalgamated clinical, experimental and fundamental vision sciences platform that is able to holistically address all areas of vision disorders. This is aligned with the current goals of Singapore’s biomedical sciences initiative, in which the application of early and late stage translational research with direct clinical and population impact is a top priority.

The Centre is looking for dynamic Research Fellows to join the newly established Ocular Functional Genomics Group led by its Principal Investigator, Assistant Professor Zhenxun Wang. The Group's primary focus is understanding glaucoma pathogenesis. Dubbed "the silent theft of sight", glaucoma is a diverse group of ocular disorders that eventually progresses to blindness. Although this condition is the world's leading cause of irreversible blindness, little is known about disease mechanisms. This has resulted in a paucity of therapeutic approaches to manage this disease.

Using multidisciplinary approaches to decipher next generation sequencing data from large cohort studies, the Group aims to delineate the role of risk genes and their influence in pathophysiology underpinning glaucoma disease progression. This knowledge will be used to enable the development of novel treatments and diagnostic strategies for glaucoma. We are looking for highly motivated, and creative candidates with a strong interest and background in the functional analysis and dissection of biological systems to perform research in this emerging field of study.

The selected candidate will perform a variety of research activities within the overall scope of a research project under the supervision of the Principal Investigator or his designate, including but not limited to the following: -

  • Independently execute and analyse innovative experimental research.
  • Conduct accurate documenting and reporting of experimental results and/or research findings.
  • Write and review research papers, present research outcomes and conceptualise new ideas for independent research which could have a considerable influence and impact on the relevant field attracting research funding.
  • Provide guidance and mentorship to undergraduate / medical students and research assistants.

Job Requirements

  • PhD degree with strong backgounds in mechanistic biology (e.g. animal models, biochemistry, cell biology).
  • Demonstrated capability of research independence.
  • Demonstrated strategic thinking, management skills and supervision of junior laboratory members.
  • Proven ability to integrate in a team, and establish and maintain effective professional working relationships.
  • Possess excellent writing and critical thinking skills, as well as good communication and presentation skills.
