Research Fellow (OR/EID/OYS)

Date: 21-Apr-2022

Location: Outram Campus, SG

Company: National University of Singapore

Job Description

The Programme in Emerging Infectious Diseases aims to pioneer the development and discovery of new and more effective methods for the treatment, prevention and control of new and emerging pathogens. The key outcome of the research will be the early identification of new pathogens, out of which new diagnostic tests, treatments and control strategies will be developed.
Functional genomic approaches (e.g., Genome-scale CRISPR knockout, Haploid Genetic Screen, Genome-wide RNAi) have continuously driven the discovery of new knowledge about many emerging and re-emerging viruses. Using functional genomics, we aim to uncover host factors essential for the infection and pathogenesis of RNA viruses. In particular, we study arthropod-borne and human respiratory RNA viruses that pose significant public health threats. The discovery and characterization of these host genes will shed light on the underlying molecular mechanisms of viral pathogenesis. Notably, our findings may contribute cellular targets for developing novel classes of antivirals, such as host-directed antiviral therapeutics.
A Research Fellow position is currently available in the Laboratory of Molecular and Cellular Virology (Principal Investigator: Assistant Professor Ooi Yaw Shin). The successful candidate will perform a variety of functions related to research under the supervision of the Principal Investigator or his designate:

  • Independently carry out the design and execution of experimental research required by the research component of the project.
  • Write and review research papers, present research outcomes and develop connections with local and international researchers for collaboration work.
  • Conduct accurate monitoring, documenting, and reporting of experimental results and/or research findings.
  • Contribute to project management and provide guidance to junior researchers as well as undergraduate and graduate students with occasional educational/instructional activities.
  • Carry out independent research projects and collaborate with other researchers.
  • Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Job Requirements

  • PhD in Virology, Cell Biology, Genetics or other related disciplines.
  • Prior experience in molecular virology, cell biology, in vivo models, human organoids, bioinformatics, and CRISPR- based genome editing would be highly desirable.
  • Possess effective organizational and interpersonal communication with strong written and presentation skills.
  • A strong team player who is able to prioritise and can work collaboratively in a diverse workforce.

We regret that only shortlisted candidates will be notified.
