Job Description

The Signature Research Programme in Emerging Infectious Diseases (EID) aims to pioneer the development and discovery of new and more effective methods for the treatment, prevention and control of new and emerging pathogens. The key outcome of the research will be the early identification of new pathogens, out of which new diagnostic tests, treatments and control strategies will be developed.
 
A full-time Research Fellow/ Senior Research Fellow position is available at the Laboratory of Virus Evolution. The laboratory studies the rapid evolution of important respiratory RNA viruses including influenza, parainfluenza and coronavirus. The candidate is expected to play a critical role in generating and fostering a cutting-edge, interdisciplinary research environment. The candidate is also required to possess strong background in molecular virology and will be responsible for virus infection and pathogenesis, sequencing, genomic analyses and high-throughput antibody production and characterization.

The successful candidate will perform a variety of research activities under the supervision of the Principal Investigator or his/her designate, with some studies to be performed in a BSL-3 facility. The main duties and responsibilities will include but are not limited to the following: -

  • Independently carry out the design and execution of experimental research required by the research component of the project.
  • Conduct experiments including virus infection and pathogenesis in vitro and in vivo, genome sequencing, protein expression, immunohistochemistry etc.
  • Conduct antibody production and assess virus-host interactions.
  • Analyse high-throughput data, including NGS and single-cell RNA-Seq
  • Interface and network with clinical counterparts and team members to achieve the goals of the project
  • Write and review research papers, present research outcomes, conceptualise new ideas and develop plans for independent research which could have a considerable influence and impact on the relevant field attracting research funding.
  • Provide guidance and mentorship to students and research assistants.
  • Perform other related duties incidental to the work described therein.

Job Requirements

  • PhD in Virology, Molecular Biology, Immunology or other related fields.
  • Possess a strong background in molecular virology.
  • Prior experience with handling mice and conducting mice experiments.
  • Prior experience with high-throughput antibody engineering techniques is preferred. 
  • Prior knowledge of using statistical packages would be advantageous.
  • Possess excellent quantitative, analytical and organisational skills.
  • A team player who is able to prioritise, multi-task and work collaboratively in a diverse workforce.
