Job Purpose

The Department of Geography at the National University of Singapore, recognized as one of the world's leading Geography departments, is seeking a dedicated and skilled Laboratory and Field Technician.

 

The person appointed will provide both administrative and technical support, especially for the work carried out by academic staff, research staff and students in the laboratory and the field. Field-based activities may include work overseas, including on the Department’s overseas-based field courses at undergraduate and graduate levels. In the laboratory, the appointee will provide technical support for the Department’s analytical equipment, such as carbon analyser,  ion chromatograph, ICP-OES, isotope ratio mass spectrometer and FT-IR Microscope, in our recently renovated geochemical lab.

 

The successful candidate will be instrumental in contributing to the advancement of knowledge within the fields of geochemistry, environmental sciences and physical geography, working at the forefront of geographical research and education. Job Description

  • Operate laboratory equipment in the Department’s GeoLab facilities, including but not limited to ion chromatograph, carbon analyser, ICP-OES, isotope ratio mass spectrometer and FT-IR Microscope.
  • Perform preparation of environmental samples (i.e. water, soil and plants), data report, analytical quality control, and troubleshooting tasks relating to equipment located in the GeoLab.
  • Support students and researchers in their use of departmental equipment, both in the laboratory and in the field.
  • Assist with the deployment of field equipment used in teaching and research, both in Singapore and, on occasion, overseas.
  • Conduct training for new users and students in the safe operation of laboratory and field equipment.
  • Manage the procurement of laboratory consumables, reagents and equipment in the GeoLab
  • Develop and update of standard operation procedures (SOP).
  • Ensure compliance with departmental safety standards.
  • Be part of the Department Safety and Health Committee to provide support in meetings and/or activities..

Qualifications & Requirements

  • At least a Diploma in Environmental Sciences, Chemistry, Physical Geography, or a related field, though candidates with a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree are also welcome to apply.
  • An ability to work to a high level of accuracy and attention to detail, and possessing well-developed problem-solving skills
  • An ability to work safely and follow laboratory and fieldwork protocols and standards.
  • A good command of written and spoken English.
  • A willingness to work independently and as part of a team.

 

The following are desirable qualities of a successful applicant

  • Working experience in analytical chemistry, preferably in environmental chemistry
  • Ability to interpret and report the results of analytical measurements, including quality control and data validation
  • Enjoy being in the outdoors, exploring nature, and engaging in various outdoor activities
  • Administrative experience on procurement and assets management.
