Company: National University of Singapore

Job Description

The Department of English, Linguistics and Theatre Studies (https://fass.nus.edu.sg/elts/) at the National University of Singapore invites applications for a Lecturer appointment on the Educator Track Scheme, to begin in July 2025.

The purpose of the NUS Educator Track Scheme is to attract, nurture, and retain qualified and effective faculty members who approach teaching as a scholarly practice, and who therefore reflect systematically on their teaching. The Educator Track is a progressive career track (Lecturer > Senior Lecturer > Associate Professor > Professor) prioritizing evidence of sustained impact on student learning and educational leadership. The initial appointment will be made on a 3-year contract.

The successful candidate will be expected to teach introductory general linguistics as well as advanced courses in discourse studies using approaches, for example, from Conversation Analysis, Pragmatics, Systemic Functional Linguistics, Critical Discourse Studies, Corpus-Assisted Discourse Analysis, or Narrative Analysis. The teaching load on the Educator Track is equivalent to a 3:3 load (three courses per semester, totaling six per academic year). There will also be opportunities to supervise student research.

Applications must include the following documents:

  1. A brief cover letter highlighting the applicant’s educational and research background and major accomplishments in teaching, as well as courses that the applicant would be interested in teaching;
  2. A complete curriculum vitae, including the contact information of four academic referees (including the applicant’s main PhD supervisor);
  3. A teaching portfolio comprising
    1. a Preface (maximum 300 words) that should be a distilled summary of the applicant’s key contributions to student learning and educational leadership (if applicable), guided by their teaching philosophy, and
    2. a Teaching Statement (maximum 3,000 words, excluding appendices) that focuses on evidence of student learning and educational leadership (if applicable). Non-exhaustive examples of such evidence include the applicant’s reflections on their educational approach/teaching philosophy (required), information on courses taught and sample course materials (required), and student feedback (required). Appendices must not exceed 30 pages.

A reasonable monthly salary range estimate for this position is SGD5750 - SGD8000. For full consideration, please submit a complete application by December 15th, 2024. Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted.
