Job Description

The Social Media, Online behavior, and Language (SMOL) project at the Department of Communications and New Media, National University of Singapore is dedicated to the interdisciplinary study of humans and algorithms on the Internet, and its implications on the society of the future.

This is an exciting opportunity to join us as a Research Assistant under a new programme centered on online harms and hate speech in social media discussions. 

As a Research Assistant, you will be tasked with planning and executing research projects in the broad area of online/social media behavior and public attitudes. You will work closely with the Principal Investigator (PI) on quantitative research related to public engagement on and in social media discussions.

You will have the opportunity to support the project in: 

Phase 1 – Conducting literature review, designing a research project, as well as some science communication tasks. 
Phase 2 – Curating datasets and implementing SOTA baselines. 
Phase 3 – Data Collection and pre-processing.
Phase 4 – Data Analysis and result reporting

In this role, you will be supporting and contributing to research and innovative findings leading to publications in top-tier conferences/journals, as well as exciting real-world implementations.

Responsibilities

As a Research Assistant, you will be: 

•    Conducting literature reviews.
•    Supporting in the writing of research proposals.
•    Designing surveys, and IRB applications. 
•    Conducting data analysis.
•    Writing of paper under mentorship of the PI.

Qualifications

•    Minimum Bachelor’s Degree and/or Master’s degree in Communications (or in any other closely related field).
•    Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
