Teaching Assistant (Visual Cultures)

 

The Department of Communications and New Media at the National University of Singapore is launching a new minor in Visual Cultures and seeks applicants with expertise in one or more of the following areas: developmental communication, architecture, design and urban cultures, art history, visual studies, cultural studies, digital humanities, media culture, and digital literacy.
 
The initial appointment is for one (1) academic year, with the possibility of re-appointment based on performance.

Qualifications

Successful candidates must have a good Honours Degree in Communications or a closely affiliated visual-related discipline aligned with the programmatic requirements of Visual Cultures, by the appointment of start date and a record of excellence in teaching (if applicable). A passion for working closely with students and a commitment to student learning are essential. Successful candidates are also expected to have experience with online teaching, and savvy with content creation such as podcasts and websites.
 
Candidates must:
 
•    Have excellent verbal, reading, visual and written communication skills, with the ability to explain complex concepts clearly.
•    Be able to work independently and as part of an interdisciplinary team with diverse interests and opinions.
•    Show a strong interest in continued engagement with various humanities and non-humanities disciplines, as well as a commitment to pedagogical improvement and research capacity.
•    Possess a strong ability to facilitate discussions for undergraduate students.
•    Past teaching, research and facilitation experience (especially at the university level) with positive student feedback, will be considered an advantage.

Job Responsibilities

Successful candidates are expected to:

 

  • Perform between 110 and 140 hours of in-classroom teaching for related courses in the Visual Cultures minor programme under the Department of Communications and New Media or the Department of Architecture per academic year, as well as assist in the sourcing and coordination of relevant grants applicable to Visual Cultures lecture programs and pedagogies.
  • Engage in research related to the Visual Cultures minor programme, including but not limited to curriculum development with a focus on collection categories in the courses' assignments and final year projects; research for content creation of the Visual Cultures resource including in-situ digital programmes and showcases; assist in research for academic and pedagogical papers in the field of Visual Cultures.
  • Fulfil a service role within the Department of Communications and New Media.
