Job Description

We are seeking a highly qualified senior researcher (up to practice track professor) to lead translational research in the field of fuel cells, water electrolyzers, and related electrochemical systems. This position is pivotal in advancing our understanding and application of electrochemical technologies towards sustainable energy solutions in the Centre for Research on Electrochemical Systems and Technologies (CREST) in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in both theoretical and applied electrochemistry, with a proven track record of leading research teams and translating fundamental discoveries into practical applications.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Research Leadership:
a. Lead and direct research efforts focused on the development, optimization, and integration of fuel cells, water electrolyzers, and other electrochemical systems.
b. Foster a collaborative research environment, guiding junior researchers and postdoctoral fellows in experimental design, data analysis, and interpretation.
c. Publish research findings in high-impact journals and present at national and international conferences to disseminate knowledge and foster collaboration.

2. Translational Research:
a. Drive the translation of fundamental discoveries into real-world applications and technologies.
b. Collaborate with industry partners to understand technological needs, develop prototypes, and validate performance under practical conditions.
c. Seek opportunities for technology transfer and commercialization of developed technologies through patents, partnerships and spinoff companies.

3. Education and Mentorship:
a. Contribute to teaching and curriculum development in areas related to electrochemistry, fuel cells, and electrolyzer technologies.
b. Mentor final year and graduate students in their research projects, fostering a supportive and intellectually stimulating academic environment.

4. Grant Acquisition and Fundraising:
a. Proactively seek external funding from government agencies, industry partners, and foundations to support research activities and infrastructure development.
b. Develop and maintain relationships with funding agencies and industrial stakeholders to secure collaborative research opportunities and sponsorships.

5. Strategic Vision and Leadership:
a. Develop and implement a strategic vision for the research centre, aligning research priorities with institutional goals and national/global challenges in sustainable energy.
b. Collaborate with other departments, institutes, and external partners to leverage complementary expertise and resources for interdisciplinary research initiatives.

Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Significant research experience in electrochemical systems, with a focus on fuel cells, water electrolyzers, and related technologies.
  • Proven track record of scholarly publications in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Experience in leading and managing research teams, including mentoring junior researchers and postdocs.
  • Demonstrated ability to secure external research funding and manage research budgets effectively.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate effectively with diverse stakeholders, including academic peers, industry partners, and funding agencies.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in technology transfer and commercialization of research outcomes.
  • Leadership roles in professional societies or committees related to electrochemistry and energy technologies.
