Research Engineer (Shape-changing Robot)

Date: 30 Apr 2024

Location: COLLEGE OF DESIGN & ENG, Kent Ridge Campus, SG

Company: National University of Singapore

Job Description

This position involves working on a project related to the development of an origami-inspired Shape-Changing Autonomous Robot (OSCAR). These robots are endowed with the ability to change their physical form, thereby providing a unique advantage in navigating confined spaces and handling a diverse array of cargo shapes. This project mainly focuses on mechanical intelligence, encompassing physical design, actuators, and sensors for complex environment navigation.

 The main research tasks for the project include but will not be limited to:

•              development of a laboratory prototype of OSCAR: The prototype will showcase the shape-changing capabilities, demonstrating the ability to transition between different configurations. The deploy-to-stow ratio of OSCAR is expected to exceed five times, highlighting its efficient deployment and storage capabilities;

•              investigation of design, actuation, and control theory: This research endeavor will contribute to the advancement of knowledge in the field, providing insights into the principles and methodologies governing the development of shape-changing robots;

•              Publication of research findings: The anticipated outcome includes the publication of top journal and conference papers based on the shape-changing robot;

•              Coordinating a small team of researchers at different levels (e.g., FYP students, remote/on-site interns, master's students);

Qualifications

•              BEng/BSc/MEng/MSc in Robotics, Mechatronics, Mechanical Engineering, or related disciplines.

•              Experience in developing origami-based robots, and locomotive robots, and familiar with 2D prototyping techniques, 3D printing, etc.;

•              Proficiency in mechanical design, mechatronics, kinematic modeling, and dynamic control.

•              Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

•              Good teamwork abilities, self-motivation, and self-reflection.

•              Proficiency in the English language, both in oral and written form.
