Job Description
The rapid growth of the small satellite industry—often referred to as "NewSpace"—combined with declining launch costs, has driven the large-scale deployment of small satellite constellations. These constellations are not only transforming global connectivity but also serving as a foundation for advancements in distributed sensing architectures. As constellations scale into the hundreds or thousands of nodes, autonomy becomes essential for managing operations.
The Satellite Technology and Research Centre (STAR), Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, National University of Singapore, under the supervision of Asst. Prof. Sheral Crescent Tissera, is seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Researcher with expertise in Autonomous & Intelligent Systems.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Conduct original and impactful research in satellite autonomy, including on-board AI/edge computing, adaptive mission planning, and intelligent collision avoidance.
2. Design, implement, and evaluate proposed techniques using hardware- and software-in-the-loop verification and experimentation setups.
3. Disseminate research findings through high-quality journal and conference publications and contribute to competitive research grant proposals.
4. Supervise and mentor PhD students and Research Engineers in the group.
5. Engage actively in industry project meetings and foster collaboration with academic and industrial partners.
Qualifications
1. A PhD in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering/Science, Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Intelligent Systems or a related field.
2. Strong research background in one or more of the following areas: autonomous systems, on-board AI/edge computing, guidance, navigation and control.
3. Proven track record of high-quality publications in leading journals and conferences.
4. Proficiency in programming (e.g., Python, C/C++, MATLAB/Simulink) and familiarity with AI/ML frameworks.
5. Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
6. Ability to work independently, while also mentoring junior researchers and contributing to team-based projects.
7. Prior experience with satellite systems and deep knowledge of orbital mechanics are advantageous but not mandatory.
8. Open to fixed-term contract
