Job Description

We are seeking a Barium Titanate (BTO) Engineer (PhD required) to drive the development of high-performance nonlinear photonic devices using thin-film BTO.

The role will focus on understanding and controlling the relationship between crystal growth parameters and electro-optic coefficients (EOC), optimizing thin-film crystallinity, orientation, and strain to maximize χ(2) nonlinearities.

The successful candidate will lead the design and fabrication of waveguides, modulators, and resonators that exploit BTO’s exceptional Pockels matrix, targeting ultra-compact, high-speed devices exceeding 100 GB/s modulation rates. The position also involves pioneering heterogeneous integration of InGaAs photodetectors and SPADs with BTO devices for advanced optical communications and quantum photonics applications, achieving high coupling efficiency, low noise, and scalable on-chip integration.

Qualifications

•  PhD in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related field, with a strong background in nonlinear optics, ferroelectric materials, and integrated photonics.
•  Proven expertise in thin-film crystal growth (e.g., PLD, MBE, CVD, sputtering) and characterization of domain structure, strain state, and stoichiometry.
•  Hands-on experience with device design and simulation (e.g., COMSOL, Lumerical) for electro-optic modulators, micro-ring resonators, and high-speed photonic circuits.
•  Strong nanofabrication skills, including dry etching, electrode deposition, and waveguide patterning on challenging materials like BTO.
•  Knowledge of heterogeneous integration methods for III–V photodetectors with dielectric or ferroelectric platforms.
•  Demonstrated ability to correlate material properties with device performance and to achieve record-level EOC in thin-film structures.
•  Excellent analytical, experimental, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work both independently and in a multidisciplinary team.
•   Open to Fixed Term Contract.
