Job Description

Research Fellow position in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at National University of Singapore (NUS). We are seeking a talented and experienced chemist to lead the design, synthesis, and characterization of Redox-active organic molecules (Redox mediators) for application in electrochemical systems. The successful candidate will play a key role in advancing the performance and stability of our redox mediators to support lab scale and pilot scale battery recycling operations.

Key Responsibilities:
•    Design and synthesize novel redox mediator molecules with desired electrochemical properties, solubility, and stability.
•    Optimize synthesis routes for target compounds, with consideration for scalability, yield, and cost-effectiveness.
•    Perform purification and structural characterization using NMR, MS, IR, and chromatography techniques.
•    Evaluate redox behavior using electrochemical methods (e.g., cyclic voltammetry, chronoamperometry).
•    Collaborate with the engineering team to test redox mediator performance in real systems.
•  Document all process development, testing, and optimization efforts, and contribute to technical reports and presentations.

Qualifications

1.    PhD in Organic Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, Electrochemistry, or any related field.
2.    Strong background in small-molecule synthesis and purification.
3.    Experience with redox-active organic compounds is highly desirable.
4.    Hands-on experience with electrochemical instrumentation and material characterization techniques such as ICP, XRD, SEM and FTIR.
5.    Strong analytical skills and experience in data analysis and interpretation.
6.    Highly motivated, detail-oriented, and able to work independently as well as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
7.    Fluent in English (both written and spoken).
Preferred Qualifications:
•    Prior experience in organic redox flow batteries.
•    Knowledge of structure-property relationships in redox-active molecules.
•    Experience with scale-up of organic synthesis from lab to pilot scale.
