Research Fellow (Surface Chemistry)

Date: 10 Nov 2024

Location: COLLEGE OF DESIGN & ENG, Kent Ridge Campus, SG

Company: National University of Singapore

Job Description

Positions are available for Post-doctoral Fellows and Research Assistants/Engineers in the research group of Prof. Soh Siow Ling, at the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, National University of Singapore (NUS).

The research of the group is highly interdisciplinary and involves soft functional matter (e.g., polymers), electrostatics, and dynamics (e.g., transport). The research usually involves molecular interactions, surfaces, and interfaces.

A major area of focus is the separation of charge at interfaces of matter (e.g., solid, liquid, and gas). Phenomena related to interfacial charge separation are very poorly understood; hence, there are tremendous opportunities for fundamental discoveries and development of novel applications. One project in particular is the coupling of advanced types of materials and charge separation for harvesting energy from nature. Another example involves antistatic surfaces for preventing the adhesion of dust particles on surfaces.

Another area of focus involves functional polymers and stimuli-responsive systems for developing intelligence in materials.

The group aims to publish highly novel and impactful research works. Projects in the group usually involve unique research themes and strong fundamentals, including discovery and understanding of natural phenomena. Based on the fundamental science studied by the group, a wide range of applications are being developed; examples include clean energy, sustainability (e.g., recycling and filtering polluted atmosphere), surfaces with superior properties, molecular separation, drug delivery, and soft machines.

Job Requirements

This position is preferably for candidates with a Ph.D. degree and expertise in surface chemistry. The candidate preferably should be knowledgeable in surface characterization and functionalization, such as molecular functionalization (e.g., self-assembled monolayer), polymer brushes, thin-layer coatings, etc. Candidates from a general background in science and technology, including chemistry, material science, engineering (e.g., chemical, mechanical, etc), are also encouraged to apply. The ideal candidate is preferably someone open-minded to unique fields of research, independent, and hardworking.
