Job Description

The staff member (designated as a Student Support Manager or SSM) is responsible for managing student life and wellbeing matters. He/she will provide a wide range of wellness support to our undergraduates throughout their academic experience at the Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences (FASS).  SSMs will establish and maintain ongoing communication and positive relationships with students, faculty, administrative staff and external contacts to ensure our undergraduates are provided with the best possible support and guidance.  At the same time, SSMs will also play an instrumental role in student engagement and enhancement activities.

Duties & Responsibilities

There are 2 key areas of responsibility for SSMs.

Responsibility Area 1: Student Wellbeing

•    Provide advice and support to students facing emotional difficulties. Ensure thorough and proper follow-up with students on our mentoring/care list.  This includes setting up meetings, keeping in regular contact with them and checking on their well-being.

•    Provide assistance and links between students and relevant points of contact both within and outside of NUS (University Counselling Services, hospitals etc) to ensure students are able to get timely support.

•    Work closely with relevant internal and external stakeholders regarding student support and wellbeing to ensure an effective and holistic service delivery (e.g., working with student leaders/groups who are invested in building awareness of mental health within FASS and possibly the rest of NUS).

•    Provide support to administration division on handling student and staff-related incidents and crisis and ensuring that appropriate action is taken in emergency or crisis situations affecting individual students or groups of students.

•    To assess, through data gathering and research, the quality of the student advice and wellbeing services and to identify areas for development and innovation of service.

•    Leverage student life activities to enhance student wellness.  This could be in the form of organizing activities promoting well-being.

Responsibility Area 2: Student Engagement and Enhancement

•    Identify and work with relevant stakeholders to create an enriching student experience.  

•    Strengthen ongoing efforts to develop a stronger sense of belonging to and ownership of the Faculty, including creating new ways for students to stay connected to FASS after they have graduated.  This can involve engaging various stakeholder groups like students’ societies, Class Ambassadors, FASS Scholarship and Bursary recipients, Department Alumni Groups etc.

•    Cultivate student leadership via the various student societies and clubs in FASS (e.g., FASS Club); 

Other Duties

•    Provide support for various events organised by External Relations & Student Life division, or FASS at large. 

•    Any other special projects as assigned by Vice Dean or Assistant Dean. 


•    A keen interest in working in a university setting.
•    A recognized University degree.
•    At least 3 years of experience in providing guidance and general wellness support to students/ youth, including, ideally, experience in the management of individuals in crisis.
•    A good track record in engaging university-age youths is highly preferred. 
•    Resourceful with good organization, planning and project management skills. 
•    Able to work in a team and manage multiple priorities effectively. 
•    Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and able to work in both 1-to-1 scenarios and in a larger group, and with a diverse range of stakeholders (e.g., students, guardians, university staff, healthcare professionals).
•    Proficient in Microsoft Office
