Job Description

The Office of University Communications (UCO) works to enhance the reputation of the National University of Singapore by raising awareness and understanding of NUS' vision, mission, values, and achievements in education, research and entrepreneurship. We work primarily in the areas of news, marketing and brand, engagement, and crisis communications. Clients include, and are not limited to, academic, research and administrative units.

 

The job holder will work with colleagues in the UCO to enhance the global reputation and profile of NUS news and research, particularly in STEM areas. He or she will initiate opportunities to publicise the University's researchers, research discoveries and research impact to key stakeholders in the research news community.

 

Duties & Responsibilities

The UCO welcomes applications from motivated and experienced science writers with a strong background in science communications, particularly in the areas of engineering and science. 

 

The jobholder will work with colleagues to develop and deliver high quality editorial content. He or she will need to be comfortable writing for specialists as well as a general audience in an engaging manner.

 

The ideal candidate must be social media savvy and able to work independently and be a good team player. He or she needs to be mature, proactive, organised, and meticulous, and be able to multitask and work within tight deadlines. The person in this position will be expected to contribute stories as a member of the STEM news team.

 

The candidate will-

  • Develop news and research publicity opportunities
  • Communicate science to specialists as well as the public
  • Work with colleagues to identify story ideas, write and plan content for news platforms and social media
  • Pitch and contribute stories, features and commentaries as a member of the STEM news team

 

Qualifications

  • Good graduate degree in engineering, science or degree in science communication, or related disciplines
  • At least 3 years of experience in science and news writing
  • Demonstrated understanding of STEM disciplines
  • Experienced in editing and writing research news stories, features and commentaries
  • Strong editing and versatile writing skills
  • Experience in the use of digital communications, including social media, in research publicity
