Job Description

The College of Alice & Peter Tan (CAPT) is an undergraduate residential college in the National University of Singapore. It offers a 2-year living-learning programme (the University Town College Programme) to students across all faculties and schools in NUS. The programme is designed to equip students to think critically, appreciate complexity, communicate effectively and become constructive and responsible members of the community. CAPT emphasizes community engagement and active citizenship and provides a wide range of opportunities for experiential learning, both in and outside the classroom. 

 

We invite applicants who are keen to contribute to the educational mission of the College to fill the following position:

 

LECTURER / SENIOR LECTURER

 

This is a full-time position on the Educator Track which is offered for two or three years in the first instance and which is renewable. 

 

Duties and Responsibilities

 

  • Lead or facilitate seminar-style courses offered by the College as part of the University Town College Programme. These multi-disciplinary and interdisciplinary courses cover a diverse range of topics, but have in common a focus on developing critical thinking, breadth of understanding, and an informed perspective of issues that are important to society.
  • Mentor and supervise groups of students involved in the Capstone Experience (see College website capt.nus.edu.sg for details), independent study courses or other modes of learning..
  • Facilitate informal learning through interacting with students in various out-of-classroom settings, providing advice for student-led interest groups, mentoring student leaders
  • Assist with developing and coordinating aspects of the College curriculum that enhance the learning opportunities offered to students (e.g. academic visitors, reading groups, residencies, artist-in-residence programmes, study trips abroad)..
  • Other ad-hoc projects as and when assigned.

Qualifications

  • For Lecturer, PhD degree with a minimum of 2 years’ relevant teaching experience, preferably at undergraduate level, and evidence of aptitude and interest in higher education. (Teaching undertaken as a Graduate Student can potentially count toward this.)
  • For Senior Lecturer, PhD degree with a minimum of 5 or more years of teaching experience at Lecturer or similar level and evidence of positive influence in higher education settings.
  • Enthusiasm for mentoring, supervising and interacting with students outside of the classroom, and commitment to this role, is essential. Previous experience in multi-disciplinary and seminar-style teaching is an advantage.
  • A track record of publication in the area of expertise, or evidence of interest in pedagogical research, would be an advantage.
