Job Description

The Centre for English Language Communication (CELC) at the National University of Singapore (NUS) prepares its undergraduate and postgraduate students for higher education and the workplace by equipping them with academic communication, professional communication, and other 21st century skills. CELC offers courses that range from basic academic literacy courses to writing and critical thinking, and workplace communication courses.

 

Aligned with NUS’ mission “to educate, inspire and transform” and in response to the demands of the evolving national and global contexts, CELC courses are explicitly designed to meet the needs for students to be digitally fluent, to be collaborative and engaged with the community, and to be disposed towards lifelong and independent learning.

 

CELC invites applications for the following full-time non-tenure educator track teaching position.

Qualifications

Position of Lecturer

Applicants for the position of lecturer must meet the following selection criteria:

1. A doctoral degree in any academic area, preferably in applied linguistics.

2. The equivalent of two years of full-time teaching experience in higher education, with evidence of expertise in the teaching of academic writing, science communication or workplace communication.

3. Experience in course design, material development, and/or assessment.

4. Evidence of reflective and scholarly teaching, which could be presented in the teaching or research statement.

5. Familiarity with the use of IT for teaching and administrative purposes.

 

Applicants who do not meet the selection criteria 2-4 may be considered for the position of instructor..

 

Other considerations:

  • Research expertise and contributions in one or more the following specific areas will be viewed favourably: second language writing, EAP/ESP, genre-based approaches, science communication, workplace communication, corpus methods, language testing, digital technologies for teaching.
  • Contributions to services in ELT, academia, or higher education will be viewed favourably.
  • Scholars in the final, writing stage of their doctoral program will be considered.

  a. Tertiary academic qualifications and the year of award for each degree.

  b. Employment history in academia within the last five years and how that constitutes the equivalent of two years of full-time teaching in higher education.

  c. Courses or areas taught.

  d. Participation in course design and material development.

  e. Familiarity with the use of IT for teaching and administrative purposes.

  f. Other achievements in teaching (e.g., teaching awards).

 g. Publications and other achievements in research.

 h. Service in ELT or education.

 i. Current and expected salaries in SGD.

 j. Names and contact details of three, preferably academic, referees.

 

3. A teaching statement detailing your teaching philosophy, approaches, innovations, accomplishments, impacts and reflections (1,500 words); up to 5 appendices to support the teaching statement may be included.

4. A research statement detailing your research interests, accomplishments, publications, and plans (1,500 words); sample papers may be included as appendices.

5. Student and peer evaluations of your teaching from the last three years.

Other Information

The starting salary will be commensurate with the applicant's qualifications and experience. Successful candidates will commence work in July or December.
