Job Description

We are currently seeking a motivated and dedicated Research Assistant, who will play a crucial role in the research at the Reproductive Evolutionary Laboratory (http://www.reprolabnus.com/). They will be conducting molecular lab work, utilizing bioinformatics tools, analyzing data, and managing the molecular laboratory and overseeing the insectary. The ideal candidate will be adept at independent problem-solving, familiar with molecular lab work techniques, and have experience with bioinformatics tools, statistics (e.g., R program), and computer coding. Knowledge of how to use the Linux Operating System and command line is essential, and familiarity with Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) and MinION Oxford Nanopore technologies is highly desirable.


This position involves heavy involvement in research, on top of overseeing the daily operations of the molecular laboratory and the insectary. On-the-job training will be provided. Key responsibilities of this role include:
• Conduct molecular labwork, including DNA/RNA extraction, PCR, and DNA sequencing for various insect species.
• Utilize bioinformatics tools for processing genomics data.
• Independently troubleshoot and optimize experimental protocols to ensure the efficiency of research processes.
• Work well as a team player and collaborate closely with team and lab members on research projects.
• Maintain the molecular laboratory, overseeing its daily operations.
• Manage the insectary and fly cultures, and keep them alive for ongoing experiments.

Qualifications

Key requirements for this role include:
• Bachelor of Science or Master of Science degree.
• Strong problem-solving skills, people management skills and ability to work independently.
• Proficiency in molecular labwork techniques, including DNA/RNA extraction, PCR, and sequencing.
• Familiarity with bioinformatics tools and statistics knowledge for data analysis.
• Knowledge of the Linux Operating System and familiar with using command-line. 
• Experience with Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) and MinION Oxford Nanopore technologies is highly desirable.
• Should be comfortable working with insects.
