Job Description: 

The Centre for Advanced 2D Materials (CA2DM) is seeking a Research Assistant on a one-year contract. The successful candidate will work in the laboratory on projects focused on applying 2D materials to membranes for gas and liquid separation and purification.

In addition to research activities, the role will contribute to the long-term safety and operational readiness of the laboratories. Resposibilities include supporting preventive maintanence, upkeep of research tools, and assisting with basic troubleshooting of equipment.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Work on materials synthesis and preparation for membrane fabrication
  • Work with sample preparation and characterisation, including systematic results reporting and quality control
  • Work with experimental setups for separation processes
  • Perform laboratory measurements and present reports on experimental results
  • Calibrate/maintain the assigned equipment
  • Support on standard operating procedures, risk assessments, and experimental plans for assigned equipment and processes
  • Manage general lab inventory and administrative support on the purchase procedures
  • Collaborate with partnering collaborators and research groups
  • Work in a laboratory environment with a team of multidisciplinary and multicultural researcher
  • Participate in routine housekeeping
  • Review and understand scientific and technical literature

Job Requirements

  • Candidates must hold an internationally recognised diploma (polytechnic), bachelor’s or master’s degree in chemistry, chemical engineering, material science/engineering or a related field
  • Laboratory work as a team player with self-motivation, proactivity, intellectual curiosity, and good communication skills
  • Meticulous, resourceful, and adaptable, with a positive attitude and ability to work independently or in a team
  • Ability to multi-task and adapt to work in a high-demand environment
  • Hands-on experience working with experimental laboratory procedures
  • Practical experience in handling inorganic and organic chemicals
  • Very good communication skills and disposition to handle procedures of purchase and management of chemicals and materials
  • Practical experience in one or several of the following areas: filtration systems, materials characterisation methods, sample characterisation by microscopy, quality control of fabrication processes and samples
  • Ability to shape and drive a laboratory work agenda to deliver technical results
  • Rigour, strong work discipline, motivation and punctual reliability with the ability to meet tight deadlines
