Research Assistant (Marine Biology & Ecology)

Job Description

The Marine Biology and Ecology Group at the Tropical Marine Science Institute (TMSI) in the St John’s Island National Marine Laboratory (SJINML) invites applications for full-time Research Assistants to elucidate marine invertebrate biodiversity of intertidal and subtidal habitats. The contract appointment is initially for one year with the possibility of renewal for a further two years. Successful applicants will join an existing team of researchers responsible for establishing high-resolution biological baselines for marine environmental assessment and monitoring.

Qualifications

Key responsibilities

1. Sample collection in the field
2. Sample sorting/live observations in the laboratory under the microscope
3. Sample preservation, identification, curation and database management
4. Report writing
5. Purchasing of equipment and consumables
6. Equipment maintenance and housekeeping
7. Management of volunteers
8. Ensuring safety of personnel
9. Any other duties as and when assigned.

Candidates with experience in molecular sequencing, as well as collecting and handling small (less than 1 cm) invertebrates are advantages. They are also expected to be highly motivated and be able to work independently and as a team, to achieve research goals.  Applicants with no experience are welcome to apply.
