Job Description
The Mechanobiology Institute (MBI) at the National University of Singapore (NUS) is a leading multi-disciplinary institute devoted to developing new paradigms for understanding biological functions in health and diseases from the perspective of cell, tissue and organ mechanics/dynamics and mechano-signal transduction. The institute operates on a fully integrated open-lab philosophy, with an extensive infrastructure supported by core facilities dedicated to technology such as state-of-the-art light microscopy, nano- and micro- fabrication, and computing
We are seeking a highly motivated Research Assistant in the Vascular Mechano-medicine Lab of Dr. Shailaja Seetharaman at the MBI and Department of Physiology, Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, NUS. The Vascular Mechano-medicine Lab (https://www.mechano-medicine-lab.com/) decodes and engineers the fundamental feedback mechanisms driving vascular tissue function in health and disease, with the goal of translating these discoveries into disease prediction and novel therapeutic strategies
The Research Assistant will gain expertise in cell and tissue biology, quantitative biology, and bioengineering approaches to uncover how mechanical forces affect blood vasculature in cardiovascular aging and disease. Specifically, the Research Assistant will develop interdisciplinary high-throughput screening approaches using 2D and 3D models of vascular systems. He/ she will carry out this research project with close mentorship and guidance, in a highly collaborative and interactive environment
The Research Assistant’s key responsibilities will include:
- Designing and conducting experiments involving cell culture, confocal microscopy, and microfluidics
-
Analyzing experimental data using available tools
-
Working collaboratively with researchers in the lab to support project goals
-
Following standard operating procedures and protocols for various experimental methods, and supporting day-to-day lab operations
-
Ensuring adherence to lab safety protocols and regulatory compliance
This position is ideal for aspiring researchers looking to pursue graduate studies in the future. Appointments will be made on a 1-year contract basis in the first instance, with the possibility of extension.
Qualifications
- Candidates with a Bachelor’s or Master’s in any fields of biology, physiology, bioengineering, biophysics, or computational and systems biology are welcome to apply
-
Prior knowledge of routine cell culture or microscopy techniques will be advantageous
-
Willing to collaborate and work together with researchers and graduate students
-
Strong organizational, communication, and teamwork skills
- Willing to learn new skills necessary to achieve project goals
To Apply
Applications should also include a cover letter, curriculum vitae (CV), and the contact information of 2 references in one single PDF file. Informal enquiries are welcome and should be made to Dr. Shailaja Seetharaman at shailaja.seetharaman@gmail.com. We regret that only shortlisted candidates will be notified.
