Job Description

The NUS Museum and Baba House are the only University Museums in Singapore. The NUS Museum's collections include Southeast Asian, Chinese, Indian materials including modern and contemporary art. Alongside the Museum's artefact and artwork collections are archival materials pertaining to exhibitions, artist documents, the institution's histories and pedagogical documents. These records are stored in the Museum's Resource Library, current in limited access for individual scholarship pertaining to the collections. They have integral sources for Singapore studies, curatorship and contemporary practices for research clusters, curators and students studying the region.

 

While the Museum archives are managed as a distinct collection, they serve the institution's curatorial research and have been a subject for numerous display. They are a significant resource for interdisciplinary inquiry and collaborations through an archive centred approach to collections and exhibitions.

 

The role of Assistant Curator  (Museums Archives) is important to support ways in which archival materials are instituted as museum collections that interprets  and learns across various discipline. In this role, the Assistant Curator participates in initiatives to preserve, manage, interpret, curate and promote the records to meet the research needs of the NUS community and Singapore industry.

 

Duties & Responsibilities:

The role of Assistant Curator, Museum Archives is as follows, but not limiting to:

  • To acquire organise and maintain physical archival records / documentations, while proposing and establishing the appropriate digital infrastructure that preserves the pedagogy and curatorial impetus of the materials.
  • Responsible for maintaining the integrity of the data in our collection management system and continually looking for ways to derive increasing value from the data, including monitoring cataloguing efficiency.
  • Share responsibility for collection planning, development, including working with donors, archives specialists and faculty to preserve the heuristic potential of the archives in exhibitions and NUS courses.
  • With keen interest in curating, contributes to relevant processes and content through research, writing, interactions and planning.
  • Explore new areas for collection development as we take an expansive view of institutional assets, in alignment with NUS Museum's strategic collecting.
  • Develop collection policies and conduct ongoing analyses of collection strengths.

Qualifications

  • Relevant experience in maintaining Museum archives, records and documentation, as well as projection management, preferably in an academic setting.
  • Bachelor's Degree from a recognised institution in Art History / Cultural Studies, Humanities, Museum studies with 2 to 4 years of professional practice in the relevant field. A Master's degree qualification is preferred.
  • Familiar or experienced with the use of digital asset  management systems for the purposes of record-keeping, knowledge management, and archival.
  • Strong analytical ability, able to organize information logically, making use if intuitive taxonomies of classification for ease of retrieval and reference.
  • Experience with project management, particularly in exhibition development and event production.
  • Good communication, presentation, and instructional skills.
  • Strong inter-personal skills, including influencing, and negotiating skills.
