Choral Director Position Centre for the Arts, Office of Student Affairs 

The National University of Singapore, through the Office of Student Affairs' Centre for the Arts (CFA), invites applications from accomplished Singapore-based choral conductors to join our vibrant arts community. Guided by the NUS Arts for All (AFA) framework, we seek an outstanding leader who can articulate a compelling vision for university choral activity and will inspire and mentor students in musical excellence, developing their vocal, ensemble, and leadership skills within the university's structured and interdisciplinary approach. The ideal candidate will actively lead collaborative arts initiatives and foster community choir engagement across campus.

 

Key Responsibilties:

  • Artistic Leadership : Provide visionary and expert choral instruction for the NUS Choir and the wider campus community, nurturing musical and technical growth while guiding students through performance preparation for major concerts at the university and beyond.
  • Interdisciplinary Engagement : Develop cross-disciplinary and cross-genre collaborations, connecting choral practice with wider artistic and academic contexts within the university and across the ASEAN community.
  • Student Development : Mentor choir members and their student leaders by guiding the planning and execution of student-led initiatives, community outreach activities, and collaborations with other arts groups on campus, including vocal ensembles in university halls and residential colleges.
  • Community Building : Foster an inclusive, collegial, and supportive environment where students at all levels can explore and develop their passion for choral singing.
  • Programme Planning : Design progressive, comprehensive training and performance repertoire together with CFA leadership and in consultation with the choir's student executive committee, preparing the group for at least one major concert or equivalent per academic year.

Qualifications

  • A master's degree in music, in related choral fields, or an equivalent combination of tertiary education and impactful profession practice.
  • Demonstrable track record with at least 5 years of relevant experience teaching and leading tertiary, community, and professional vocal ensembles, with evidence of artistic excellence and impact
  • Ability to articulate and implement a compelling vision for university choral activity with a broader campus arts education context.
  • Experience in nurturing talent and supporting student leadership development in arts.
  • Proficiency in coaching choral repertoire in multiple languages, including but not limited to English.
  • Active involvement as a performer in the local and/or international choral or vocal music scene.
  • Familiarity with interdisciplinary arts practice and/or experience in community-based arts initiatives is highly desirable.

 

Additional Information:

  • This is a part-time contracted position with preset hours, scheduled in coordination with CFA leadership.
  • Compensation will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
  • Shortlisted candidates will be invited to an interview where they will be asked to present their vision for university choral activity. Finalists will be invited to lead the choir over a trial period culminating in a performance

The NUS Choir is a dynamic community of students singers dedicated to the pursuit of choral artistry and the joy of music-making. As part of the AFA framework, the Choir serves as a platform for students to deepen their artistic practice while fostering ground-up, student-led initiatives. Our members perform a diverse repertoire and actively contribute to the NUS arts ecosystem through concerts, outreach, and collaborative projects on campus and in the community.
