Job Description

NUS Libraries is searching for a research engineer to focus  on heritage projects and may work on preserving cultural artifacts, implementing digital restoration techniques, developing technologies for conservation, or contributing to archaeological and historical research using advanced scientific methods. The role could involve a combination of technology, data analysis, and collaboration with experts in heritage preservation.

 

Duties & Responsibilities

 

•    Collaborate with heritage preservation experts and project manager to understand project requirements and goals.
•    Develop and implement advanced technologies for the preservation and restoration of cultural artifacts and historical sites.
•    Utilize digital restoration techniques to enhance and safeguard heritage assets, ensuring their longevity.
•    Conduct research using scientific methods to contribute valuable insights to the heritage projects.
•    Design and implement data analysis tools to extract meaningful information from heritage data sets.
•    Stay updated on emerging technologies and methodologies in heritage preservation and integrate them into project workflows.
•    Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including NUS Libraries, NUS Museum, National Heritage Board, and heritage communities, to achieve project objectives.
•    Document research findings and methodologies for future reference and knowledge sharing.
•    Provide technical expertise and support for heritage conservation initiatives.
•    Contribute to the development of grant proposals and research funding applications for heritage projects.
 

Requirements

Qualification

Preferably a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or Information Technology, with experience of Data Analysis and Visualization. Added advantage if familiarise with data analysis tools, such as Python, NumPy, QGIS or Tableau.  

 

Years of Experience

At least 2-3 years of managing projects and/or providing consultation with the knowledge of historical construction techniques and conservation methods.

 

Knowledge and Skills required

  • Demonstrated knowledge of HTML, CSS and JavaScript, with a least one framework such as React, Vue or Svelte
  • Understanding of WebGL and demonstrated experience with three.js
  • Demonstrated experience with AWS or GCP (AWS preferred)
  • Working knowledge of the JamStack principles
  • Working knowledge and experience with 3D captures and modelling techniques
  • Solid working knowledge of version control with GIT
  • Excellent understanding or package management in the JavaScript ecosystem (npm, yarn or pnpm. pnpm preferred)
  • Experienced with common data analysis tools software such as Python with pandas and NumPy libraries, R for programming language, GIS tools such as QGIS, Tableau, and specialized heritage management software like Arches or PastPerfect

 

Deliverables:

  •  Development and implementation of a repository for digital assets including 3D models
  • Document findings and methodologies for capacity and capability building 
  • Integration of technologies for preservation and restoration of historical and heritage assets
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of technologies to meet project objectives
