Veterinarian (IACUC)

Job Purpose

Reporting to the AV/CM Director, this person will support the Attending Veterinarian (AV) and Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) in assuring that NUS maintains compliance with regulatory requirements, maintains AAALAC accreditation, and has an exemplary animal care and use program.  The individual will do this by performing IACUC protocol review, facility inspections, participating in the annual program review, participating in PAM, and assisting with policy/SOP development. 

The services and support provided by this position are for NUS staff, students, and faculties included as part of the NUS “campus-wide” animal care and use program (involving multiple schools and departments).
 

Duties & Responsibilities

Support the AV and IACUC by performing the following tasks:

 

•    Review the majority of animal care and use protocols (new submissions, amendments, annual

      reviews, designated member review) and provide recommendations to maintain compliance,

     enhance animal welfare, improve study design, and assure procedures are in alignment with

      institutional policies, SOPs, and practices.

•    Triage protocols and work with the CM Head of Veterinary Services to assign them, as needed, to

       other CM veterinarians for review and approval.

•    Attend and participate in IACUC meetings

•    Serve as AV alternate

•    Participate in IACUC inspections (vivarium, satellite facilities, and investigator procedure rooms)

•    Participate in annual program reviews

•    Draft and review IACUC policies, guidelines, and SOPs.  Participate in the development and

       review of CM SOPs relevant to IACUC protocol review (euthanasia, humane endpoints, etc).

•    Participate in post-approval monitoring (PAM) activities, including PAM in the CM vivarium and in

       investigator procedure rooms.  Assist the IACUC PAM officers as needed.

•    Develop new IACUC Policies and SOPs and review and amend existing ones

•    Ensure compliance with applicable regulations (Animal and Veterinary Services/ AVS, Ministry of

       Health/ MOH)

•    Support accreditation by AAALAC-International 

•    Other duties as requested by the Attending Veterinarian/ Director of Comparative Medicine.

 

NUS currently support research using rodents (mice, rats, guinea pigs), rabbits, non-human primates, pigs (mini-pigs and farm pigs), fish (2 species), and amphibians (2 species of frogs)

Requirements

Required Qualifications and Experience:
•    Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (or equivalent) 
•    Minimum 5 years experience in the field of laboratory animal medicine
•    Minimum 5 years experience serving as a voting member on an IACUC
•    Licensed by or eligible to be licensed by AVS (The Animal and Veterinary Service, NParks, Singapore) 

Knowledge and Skill:
•    Must possess effective interpersonal skills, excellent verbal skills, and an ability to problem-solve.
•    Must be able to write clearly and concisely in English 
•    Knowledge of the Guide to the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, Singapore NACLAR Guidelines 2nd Edition, and other applicable regulations and guidelines governing laboratory animal care and use.

Preferred Qualifications and Experience:
•    Board Certification in Laboratory Animal Medicine is an asset
•    Experience with a variety of animal models utilizing mice, rats, rabbits, pigs, nonhuman primates, and aquatic species.  
•    Experience working at an AAALAC-accredited academic research institution with an emphasis on biomedical research

Other:
•    Proficient in the use of computer software applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel and the ability to learn the NUS web-based IACUC protocol-review software.
•    A desire to have an exemplary animal care and use program
•    The ability to work successfully with people from different backgrounds
•    Certified Professional IACUC Administrator (CPIA) certification is a plus.
