Job Description
Climate change is the defining challenge of our time, shaping the health of populations for generations to come. The National University of Singapore is tackling this crisis through its Centre for Sustainable Medicine (CoSM), working to accelerate the transition to low-carbon, climate-resilient health systems.
Purpose of the post
We invite applications for a highly motivated Research Assistant to work with the Principal Investigator and study team members to manage and conduct various research projects towards sustainable medicine, ensuring successful and timely completion of projects. This post has a specific focus on supporting the Centre’s research on understanding and quantifying the environmental impacts of healthcare products and clinical pathways.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
The individual will be responsible for the following tasks:
- Develop new models and methodologies to account for the environmental impacts of health systems. The individual will develop skills in data collection, carbon footprinting, cost-benefit analysis, life cycle analysis, monitoring and reporting, scenario development, forecasting, and policy appraisal.
- Assist in evaluating the environmental impact of healthcare products and clinical pathways using a range of approaches including carbon footprints and broader life cycle assessment.
- Assist in the data retrieval and critical appraisal of secondary data sources that evaluate the environmental impact of healthcare products and clinical pathways
- Engage in a variety of research-related activities including literature searches and reviewing, preparation of research materials, data collection, entry, analysis, and interpretation using in accordance with the highest research standards.
- Perform research operations and administration duties such as the preparation of grant, ethics review applications, manuscripts, reports, and other relevant documentation of study-related matters.
- Perform other administrative and basic project management support to the research projects, as assigned by the Director/Principal Investigator.
- Function as an effective, dynamic team player as part of the wider CoSM team.
Appointments will be made on a 12-month contract basis with the possibility of extension.
Qualifications
The applicant must:

- Hold a bachelor’s degree in disciplines related to any of the following:
- A highly numerate subject (engineering, mathematics, physics, statistics, econometrics, computer science, operational research, or similar).
- Environmental and climate sciences.
- Public health and health services research.
- Demonstrate a keen interest in sustainability, energy systems, climate change, and/or health services and public health.
- Be highly numerate, analytical, and be willing to work with complex datasets.
- Be a proficient user of Microsoft Office, including Excel (use of functions, data tables, pivot tables, statistical analysis, data visualization, macros, etc.).
- Hold a bachelor’s degree in disciplines related to any of the following:
Qualifications

- Be willing to undertake further training in relevant data collection and modelling techniques.
- Be a team player with an ability to work independently.
- Be resourceful, adaptable, and meticulous.
- Have excellent command of spoken and written English, with strong interpersonal and communication skills.
Additional Skills
- The ideal applicant should also:
- Have experience working in sustainability, energy systems, life cycle analysis, and/or health services research.
- Demonstrate knowledge of LCA databases (e.g. Ecoinvent, OpenLCA, SimaPro, GABI) and carbon accounting standards (e.g., GHG Protocol, ISO 14044, ISO 14040, ISO 14067, PAS2050 etc.).
- Demonstrate ability to critically appraise academic literature and life cycle assessments published in various forms (including industry reports)
- Demonstrate knowledge of statistical computing, data science, data modelling, or data visualization languages and software (e.g., PowerBI, Python, R, SAS, SPSS, SQL, Tableau, etc.).
