Job Description
The National University of Singapore invites applications for a Research Assistant in the Department of Paediatrics, Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine. Professor Wong Hock Boon, fondly known as the Father of Paediatrics in Singapore, founded the Department of Paediatrics in 1962. This department is known for its continuous successions of distinguished teachers who have given Singapore a solid foundation in paediatric medicine during the early years of nation building. Apart from providing medical education in paediatrics, the department is deeply committed to scientific research and has key research areas in oncology, genetics, immunology, metabolic diseases, cardiac health, and neurocognitive development. Appointments will be made under a 1-year contract of service in the first instance, and may be extended subsequently.
Purpose of the post
The job incumbent will be part of a friendly team of clinical and research staff who are interested in understanding children’s self-regulation skills and brain development. The Research Assistant will work closely with the Principal Investigator (PI) and study team members on research-related duties to ensure successful translation of research findings into clinical practice, policy, and the public.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
Primary Responsibilities (80%)
- Participate in the cultural adaptation of a parent-child intervention curriculum
- Recruit and consent research participants into a randomized effectiveness-implementation trial
- Collect research data from families, including parent-child interaction and neuroscience data at the lab and at healthcare settings (training will be provided)
- Ascertain high quality neuroscience (EEG/fNIRS) data and willing to learn data processing
- Maintain neuroscience equipment, keep proper inventory and records of assets
- With assistance from lab members, complete relevant literature search, grant applications and progress reports, institutional review board applications, or research posters
Main Duties and Responsibilities
Secondary Responsibilities (20%)
- Learn to code research data and prepare data for analysis
- Act as an intermittent liaison to communicate results with stakeholders
- Learn about different psychological and cognitive assessments for children and assist in administration and scoring
Qualifications
- Have a Bachelor’s Degree in health-related disciplines (e.g. psychology, public health, life sciences, etc) or in biostatistics
- Be an independent self-starter and critical thinker
- Have worked in a research setting for 2 years or more
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Excel, Powerpoint, and Word, and preferably, have foundational knowledge of one of the following statistical programmes (SPSS, STATA, SAS, or R)
- Competent in verbal and written communication skills
- Interest in children and works well in a team
