Job Description

The National University of Singapore (NUS) invites applications for the role of Research Assistant with the Heat Resilience & Performance Centre (HRPC), Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine. The HRPC is a first-of-its-kind research centre, established at the NUS, to spearhead and conduct research and development to better enable the future challenges arising from rising ambient heat.

 

We are looking for proactive and enthusiastic candidates to be part of our growing team focused on heat health research with translational impact. Research Assistants will play a key role in assisting in the development, execution and analysis of research aimed at addressing the challenges of training and operating in rising ambient temperatures. The research areas will delve into areas including heat acclimatization, chronic heat exposure, and sensemaking of physiological biomarkers. Successful candidates will be part of a multi- disciplinary group comprising exercise and thermal physiologists, data scientists, biomedical engineers and researchers. This specific role will provide you with a unique opportunity to be exposed to both outfield and in-lab research experiences, working closely with the team to quantify heat impacts, and generate fundamental and forward-looking solutions to working in the heat. There are also opportunities to pursue a part-time PhD with HRPC.

 

The main areas of responsibilities of the role will include but limited to the following:

 

  • Working with research PIs and teams to develop new research ideas
  • Performing literature searches, assimilating, and summarizing key information, as well as identifying knowledge gaps
  • Designing and conducting relevant quantitative studies (including lab and outfield studies)
  • Leading in-lab (climatic chamber), outfield data collection and wet laboratory experiments
  • Performing biological sampling (e.g., blood, urine, sweat), sample processing and wet laboratory assays (e.g. colorimetric or multiplex immunoassays)
  • Establishing and managing large databases
  • Interpreting and analysis of data
  • Generating reports and present data to relevant stakeholders
  • Contributing to conference presentations and write papers for submission to peer reviewed journals
  • Collaborating across teams, contributing to multiple research projects at once

Qualifications

A minimum qualification of a Bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Science, Life Sciences, Exercise Science, Physiology, or equivalent. Candidates should have a strong laboratory-based background with demonstrated practical laboratory-based experience and are comfortable working with human biological samples.

 

In addition, the role will require the following job relevant experience or attributes:

 

    • Keen interest in heat health and human performance
    • Proficient in data analysis tools in quantitative research
    • Two or more years of research and/or laboratory work experience would be an advantage
    • Proven knowledge of data collection methods
    • Experience in wet laboratory techniques including sample collection, processing and experimental procedures
    • Familiarity with laboratory safety protocols, documentation and biospecimen handling standards.
    • Good written and verbal communication skills
