Job Description

The National University of Singapore invites applications for Research Associate in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, NUS. The project(s) are both supported by NAMIC-A*STAR and NMRC.

The Department is actively engaged in cutting edge research that encompasses basic science research, translational research and clinical applications of new technologies. We have a very strong research culture with emphasis on translating our findings from the laboratory bench to the clinical bedside in the form of finding and developing novel and useful therapies. Over the years, we have built a reputation for quality research in the areas of tissue engineering, osteoporosis and fractures, and orthopaedic bioengineering.

Purpose of the post

The Research Associate (RA) will be responsible to, and work closely with, the Principal Investigator and study team members (NUH doctors, Staff from the Department of Mechanical engineering NUS) to ensure the successful completion of the study on time. 

Main Duties and Responsibilities

The Research Associate will liaise with the relevant personnel in the hospital & NUS to ensure the smooth running of the projects, and will be accountable to the Principle Investigator (PI) & the team. The RA will be able to:

  1. Oversee the overall project execution within the Department of Orthopaedics and NUS and; 
  2. Provide necessary administrative supports to the PI and Co-Is, such as organizing regular meetings to maintain regular updates with other members of the research team while collaborating with the multiple departments involved. Such meetings may only be possible after office hours or on weekends;
  3. Undertake the day-to-day overseeing the progress of the project at various project phases with team members at the study sites;
  4. Maintain up-to-date DSRB/ecos Records, apply for new DSRB/ecos proposals and prepare reports with other staff during the study. Help with timely DSRB submissions/Reports of the ongoing ng Projects;
  5. Maintain and oversee accounts, procurement and file maintenance for the projects under the PI’s supervision.
  6. Conduct literature searches relevant to the project and explore for future related projects;

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Assist in writing Grant proposals;
  2. Maintain clinical knowledge database, should be able to analyse data through Statistical Procedures (appointed person will be encouraged and supported for learning appropriate courses in Statistics) 
  3. Maintain the highest standard of professional conduct and record keeping in accordance with policies and procedures of the department; Assist in preparing both progress and final reports of the project;
  4. To have some expertise and interest in 3D Printing and/or CAD design which will help in the project of 3D Printing of metals and polymers for spinal implants.
  5.  To learn and run EPIC & CPSS to get relevant records of patients who have undergone treatment for spine conditions from the clinical data;
  6. Assist with any other duties of a similar nature that are delegated by the PI.

Qualifications

The applicant should:

  1. Have a degree from local/foreign universities in the field of Science or Engineering, with expertise and an avid interest in 3D Printing and/or CAD design.  Second preference would be given to graduates with MBBS degree or other Bachelor’s degrees from a reputable university, preferably in biomedical engineering or life sciences with an interest to learning of 3D printing and/or CAD design.
  2. Possess knowledge of appropriate Engineering/Medical Terminology with Proficiency in the English language to be able to communicate effectively to write scientific manuscripts and reports;
  3. Experienced in DSRB application process and Healthcare Research landscape of Singapore is preferable;
  4. Strong aptitude in research work; good oral and written communication skills
  5. Be able to work on flexible hours (after office hours/weekends) on a mutually acceptable schedule with the PI;
  6. Meticulous, well-organized and able to do multi-tasks whenever necessary;
  7. Monitor and document experimental results and research findings; and
  8. Assist with general Record upkeep such as files and research documents.
