Job Description
The National University of Singapore invites applications for position of Research Associate/ Veterinary Technician in the Department of Ophthalmology, Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine to participate in an exciting research program developing treatments for myopia. Specific training will be provided and appointments will be made on a probationary basis and with a 1 year contract in the first instance, but with the possibility of extension for up to 3 years depending on the candidate’s performance, qualifications and experience. Recent PhD graduates are encouraged to apply.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
Purpose of the post/Main duties and responsibilities
Primary Responsibilities and Duties (70%)

- Support the planning, scheduling and carrying out of day-to-day animal colony breeding activities and procedures, ensuring efficient workflow and adequate care and treatment of research animals
- Maintain spreadsheets of animal breeding and interface with record storage (e.g. Tick@Lab)
- Help undertake experiments with rodents (specific training will be provided)
- Maintain laboratory and freezer order
- Undertake monitoring of animals in experimental conditions (specific training will be provided)
- Support optical measures and handling of animals (specific training will be provided)
- Support animal surgery and tissue dissection (specific training will be provided)
- All other duties as and when assigned by immediate supervisor.

Secondary Responsibilities and Duties (30%)

- Manage budget and purchase of laboratory equipment or reagents, including ordering processes
- Assist with formatting grant applications and manuscript submissions
- Assist with travel arrangements
- Help ensure compliance with Ethics and health and safety and other requirements for proper functioning of the laboratory
- Support writing of Ethics (IACUC) and safety applications and variations
- Ensure that all laboratory activities are carried out in accordance with established research protocols and standards and in compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, policies and procedural requirements

Qualifications
The applicant should have a:

Master’s in Biomedical Science or any relevant medical, biology, veterinary, anatomy, or science discipline, with more than 4 years of post-undergraduate experience or PhD Candidates with at least 2 years full-time experience as a PhD student (preferably in animal-based laboratory work).
- Specific training will be provided, but prior relevant experience, especially with live animals and animal tissues, would be an advantage
- Self-motivated and ability to work well in a team and independently
- Excellent verbal and written communication in English
- Strong interest in research work and an affinity with animals
- Knowledge of MS Office software
- Knowledge of NUS iRIMs, Concur an advantage
