Climate change is the defining challenge of our time, shaping the health of populations for generations to come. The National University of Singapore is tackling this crisis through its Centre for Sustainable Medicine (CoSM), working to accelerate the transition to low-carbon, climate-resilient health systems.

Purpose of the Post

We invite applications for a motivated Research Associate / Fellow / Senior Research Fellow to direct projects and develop methodologies to support CoSM’s leadership in healthcare emissions measurement and analysis. The postholder will oversee a small team and support the Centre for Sustainable Medicine’s (CoSM) efforts to bridge research and practice.

Key Responsibilities and Roles

  1. Health system carbon analysis projects
    • Lead comprehensive carbon footprinting and policy action planning projects with national health systems, encompassing project management and the development of robust methodologies.
    • Facilitate the secure management and public communication of carbon research data to enhance research outcomes and influence policy.
    • Develop and sustain relationships with key stakeholders, including data owners, government agencies, healthcare providers, funding organisations, and academic institutions in Singapore and in the region. Establish a community of practice for healthcare sustainability analytics.
  2. Developing common international methodologies and standards
    • Provide technical input towards the creation of regional and international standards for emissions tracking and net zero targets within the healthcare sector. Produce comprehensive tools and guidelines to aid the implementation of these standards in practice.
    • Advance CoSM’s expertise in international supply chain sustainability by employing multi-region input-output models to assess the GHG and other environmental impacts of health system supply chains.
    • Develop leads for new work with international health ministries and funding organisations.

Key Responsibilities and Roles

  1. Analytical project management and leadership
    • Lead the planning, coordination, and delivery of CoSM's priority analytics projects, ensuring alignment with strategic goals and timelines.
    • Supervise a small team, providing guidance, mentorship, and oversight to ensure high-quality work.
  2. Educational programme development and delivery
    • Contribute to the design and delivery of training and educational programs focused on sustainable healthcare practices, including lectures and workshops to healthcare practitioners and undergraduate- and masters-level students.

Appointments will be made on a 24-month contract basis with the possibility of extension.

Qualifications

The applicant must:
a) Hold a master’s degree in any discipline. A background in highly numerate subject (e.g. engineering, mathematics, physics, statistics, econometrics, computer science, climate science,) or public policy, public health and environmental sciences is advantageous.
b) Have at least 5 years of working experience, including project management and team leadership.
c) Exhibit excellent communication skills and be capable of engaging with stakeholders.
d) Be resourceful, organised, and able to manage multiple priorities effectively.
e) Be highly numerate, analytical, and be willing to work with complex datasets.

The ideal applicant should also:
a) Hold a PhD in a relevant field such as public health, policy studies, or sustainability. Postdoctoral experience is advantageous.
b) Have experience in sustainability or GHG analytics, such as carbon footprinting, life-cycle assessment, decarbonisation action planning, cost-benefit analysis of climate policy, or climate resilience and adaptation planning.

c) Have knowledge of statistical computing, data science, data modelling, or data visualisation languages and software (e.g., PowerBI, Python, R, SAS, SPSS, SQL, Tableau, etc.)
d) Have experience working in government, international policy, or healthcare organisations.
