Climate change is the defining challenge of our time, shaping the health of populations for generations to come. The National University of Singapore is tackling this crisis through its Centre for Sustainable Medicine (CoSM), working to accelerate the transition to low-carbon, climate-resilient health systems.
Purpose of the Post
We invite applications for a motivated Research Associate, Research Fellow, or Senior Research Fellow to direct projects and develop methodologies to support CoSM’s leadership in healthcare emissions measurement and net zero planning.
The postholder will oversee a small team and support the Centre for Sustainable Medicine’s (CoSM) efforts to bridge research and practice.
Key Responsibilities and Roles include:
- Research project leadership
- Develop and lead comprehensive carbon footprinting and decarbonisation projects with international organisations, national health systems, hospitals, and clinical research partners.
- Provide technical input towards the creation of regional and international standards, guidance, and tools for emissions measurement and net zero targets within the healthcare sector.
- Design and develop cutting-edge methodologies for health system carbon measurement, at global-, system-, hospital-, clinical pathway- and product-level.
- Supervise a growing team, providing guidance, mentorship, and oversight to ensure high-quality work.
- Research development, grant acquisition and communication
- Develop and sustain relationships with key stakeholders, including data owners, government agencies, healthcare providers, funding organisations, and academic institutions in Singapore and across Asia-Pacific.
- Build leads for new research with international health ministries and funding organisations through research grants and Technical Assistance project development.
- Facilitate the secure management and public communication of research data to enhance research outcomes and influence health system policy.
- Teaching and capacity building
- Design and deliver teaching on carbon analysis and sustainable healthcare practices to MSc, undergraduate and healthcare professional audiences.
- Support the development of training materials, case studies and practical tools for policy impact.
Qualifications
The applicant must:
a)
For Research Associate: Hold a master’s degree in any discipline. A background in medicine, public policy, public health, sustainability and environmental sciences, or any highly numerate subject (e.g. engineering, mathematics, physics, chemistry, statistics, econometrics, computer science, climate science) is advantageous.
For Research Fellow and Senior Research Fellow: Hold a PhD in a relevant field such as medicine, public policy, public health, sustainability and environmental sciences, or any highly numerate subject. Postdoctoral experience is advantageous.
b) Have at least 5 years of working experience, including project management and team leadership.
c) Exhibit excellent communication skills and be capable of managing a network of stakeholders.
d) Be resourceful, organised, and able to manage multiple priorities effectively.
e) Be highly numerate, analytical, and be willing to work with complex datasets.
The ideal applicant should also:
a) Have experience in sustainability or GHG analytics, such as carbon footprinting, life-cycle assessment, decarbonisation action planning, cost-benefit analysis of climate policy, or climate resilience and adaptation planning.
b) Have knowledge of statistical computing, data science, data modelling, or data visualisation languages and software (e.g., PowerBI, Python, R, SAS, SPSS, SQL, Tableau, etc.)
c) Have experience working in government, international policy, or healthcare organisations.
d) Have experience designing and delivering teaching or training programmes for academic or professional audiences.
