The National University of Singapore invites applications for Research Fellow in the Department of Microbiology & Immunology, Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine. The position will work under the Microscopy Core Facility Cluster. The microscopy cluster provides shared access to state-of-the-art instrumentation across multiple imaging platforms and techniques, technical expertise, and assistance in optimal image collection and analysis. The facility includes multiphoton microscope, confocal microscopes, high-content spinning disk confocal, slide scanner and widefield microscope as well as image analysis tools. Appointments will be made on a 2-yearly contract basis, with the possibility of extension.

 

Purpose of the post

The position will serve as an expert resource by instructing Core users in fundamental and advanced imaging techniques, developing training lectures and hands-on courses, and disseminating constructive and instructional information related to current imaging techniques and instrumentation. The position will play a part to create a collaborative and engaged user community. A special focus lies on the operation of the multiphoton and FLIM microscopy systems and establish intravital imaging pipeline.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Work with researchers to integrate multiphoton microscopy in various research projects, managing and expanding user base.
  2. Providing consultative and training services to researcher
  3. Guiding sample preparation and image analysis
  4. Establish intravital imaging
  5. Assistance in optimal image collection and analysis
  6. Assist with any other duties of a similar nature that are delegated by the PI

Qualifications

The applicant should have:

  1. Ph.D. in a related discipline in Biology, Bioengineering and four years of related experience or an equivalent combination of skills, education, and experience.
  2. Prior experience working in and/or overseeing a multi-user microscopy facility.
  3. Expertise in image analysis and multiphoton microscopy and FLIM (especially intravital imaging).
  4. In-depth-knowledge of the principles of optical microscopy and experience with various modalities of advanced optical microscopy (including confocal and multiphoton microscopy).
  5. Experience with time resolved fluorescence spectroscopy and/or fluorescence lifetime imaging.
  6. Broad knowledge and hands-on training of design, theory and operation of advanced light microscopy systems, including skill and experience in their operation.
  7. Mechanical and electronic skills relevant to maintenance, repair, and modification of scientific instruments.

Qualifications

  1. Experience with biological experimental design and implementation.
  2. Computer skills for instrument operation and data analysis including familiarity with image analysis software such as Fiji/ImageJ, IMARIS, etc. Preferably, experience with microscopy image analysis and data analysis in time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy.
  3. Experience with application for competitive research funding is an advantage.
  4. Ability to work both independently and collaboratively on interdisciplinary research projects, and to balance multiple research projects, meet deadlines and effectively collaborate with partners of different background and levels of expertise.
  5. Ability to balance scientific and technical responsibilities with management of a Core Facility.
  6. Proven ability to work effectively and collaborate with a diverse team to troubleshoot and problem solve in the support and instruction of students, post-doctoral fellows and other researchers.
  7. Strong interpersonal and written and verbal communication skills and ability to effectively train users and staff on proper procedures and methods for using advanced microscopy systems as well as processing and interpreting resulting imaging data.
