The Department of Japanese Studies at the National University of Singapore invites applications for the post of Assistant Professor (Tenure Track) in the area of cultural studies to start in July 2025 or earlier.


Applicants must demonstrate strong academic, teaching and administrative ability, and a willingness to promote a collaborative departmental culture. Duties will include teaching at both undergraduate and graduate levels, including the MA in Japanese Visual Cultures. Candidates should also be willing to contribute to the Department's team-taught, interdisciplinary courses. They should possess advanced professional proficiency in English and Japanese as they will need to carry out research and teach classes in both languages.  


The Department of Japanese Studies is a multidisciplinary department with colleagues specializing in a variety of fields including international relations, anthropology, history, popular culture, literature, performance and geography. The department is supported by a comprehensive Japanese language program in the university’s Centre for Language Studies. The Department belongs to the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS) that combines disciplinary departments with area studies departments in Asian Studies.

Qualifications

Applicants for this position should have a PhD in a discipline focusing on Japan with a broadly defined cultural studies or interdisciplinary approach. Areas of specialization can be, but not limited to, manga and anime, games, music and any other forms of popular culture. Scholars who engage with computational tools in research and teaching are particularly encouraged to apply.
