The School of Continuing and Lifelong Education (SCALE), established in 2016 as the National University of Singapore’s (NUS) hub for lifelong learning, is both an academic school and a university-wide platform. As a school, SCALE specialises in multi-disciplinary education transcending conventional domains — bringing together expertise from across NUS' diverse faculties to create integrated learning experiences. Beyond its academic function, SCALE aggregates lifelong learning opportunities from across NUS onto a single platform for alumni, works with industry and government partners to co-create workforce development and transformation programmes, and provides essential central services to catalyse and support lifelong education across the entire university, including grant management, outreach, application management, and guidance in programme innovation and frameworks.

 

About the Role

 

To augment our manpower resources in the School, we are looking for a Business Development Manager who will support our business expansion globally, particularly in China, India and Southeast Asia.

 

Reporting to the Associate Director, the successful candidate will need to have a mindset of problem-solving and consultative customer outreach and will demonstrate curiosity, collaboration and the ability to deal with ambiguity especially in a start-up environment. The successful candidate will also be result-oriented, have a clear vision, have a keen read of the market, be able to put together a scalable business strategy including how to grow the sales pipeline, engage with clients and be capable of building successful long-term relationships.

 

This role is offered on a 3-year renewable contract basis in the first instance, with the prospect of a regular open employment contract thereafter subject to satisfactory job performance during the first 3 years. 


 
Remuneration is based on a 12-month salary structure, with an annual variable bonus which is subject to the incumbent’s performance and the University/School’s prevailing remuneration policies. 

 

The incumbent will be emplaced at an appropriate appointment grade based on his/her individual merits.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:


•    Define opportunities and engagement plans, manage the sales cycle from lead generation to deal closure, building effective buying relationships, and comfortable positioning of NUS’s products in the right channels
•    Lead demand-side engagements across opportunities, building relationships and trust, fostering collaboration and customer experience
•    Become the voice of the customer internally, sensing customer needs and external market changes and communicating these insights across the organisation
•    Build strong relationships cross functionally, work closely with the SCALE’s corporate functions, IT & eLearning teams, as well as the various Schools and Faculties across NUS
•    Embrace and leverage a variety of software tools to manage the process and delivery of online programmes
•    Able to convey SCALE’s value proposition, and able to demonstrate our product and technology live and via presentations
•    Support institution-building projects that play a critical role in helping SCALE deliver our mission in a sustainable and scalable manner
•    Keep abreast of global industry trends and competition

Requirements:


Academic & Professional Certification
•    A good bachelor’s degree in any discipline from a reputable university
•    Strong English proficiency, both written and spoken, is essential
•    Being conversant in a second Asian language, e.g. Chinese, Bahasa, Tagalog/ Filipino, Vietnamese, will be an advantage in managing clients in the region 
•    IT savvy and proficient in SAAS

 

Experience & Attributes 
•    At least 5 years proven track record working in a fast-paced environment, and experience in stakeholder management, with at least 1 year of commercial business development experience in Asia
•    Exposure to international executive education, youth programmes or corporate development 
•    A strong desire to win, and to continually develop personal and professional skills
•    A start-up attitude, intellectually curious, highly collaborative, with an entrepreneurial temperament and excited about a flat, “all hands-on-deck” environment
•    Strong project management ability to drive multiple work streams and manage senior-level stakeholders in diverse settings
•    Ability to independently design and conduct research, gather data, and structure quantitative and qualitative analyses and present arguments to senior management
•    Highly self-motivated with the ability to work fast and smart independently
•    Passion and excitement to be part of a mission to transform the way higher education is delivered
•    Comfortable with ambiguity – the incumbent should be comfortable with it and understand that not everything is 100% defined all the time
