Job Description
The Laboratory Technologist supports day-to-day laboratory operations and teaching activities in the Department of Physiology. The role combines hands-on technical work with administrative coordination to ensure safe, efficient, and compliant operations across education, safety, core facilities, infrastructure, IT, and events. Fresh graduates are welcome.
Key Responsibilities:
Education support:
- Provide end-to-end course administration: timetables, venues, tutor/TA coordination, assessment logistics, materials management, attendance tracking, and marks verification.
- Support examinations: venue setup, materials preparation, student verification, room monitoring, incident management, script handling, and reporting.
- Facilitate small-group practicals: set up experiments, demonstrate techniques/equipment, and provide on-the-spot guidance.
- Prepare logistics for Continuing Education & Training (CET) classes, including off-site sessions.
- Assist with Risk Assessments (RA) and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for field trips and practicals.
- Conduct hands-on safety refreshers/training for TAs/LTs/LEs before tutorial/practical sessions.
Safety and compliance:
- Serve on the department safety committee; act in designated safety roles (e.g., Fire Safety Coordinator, Fire Warden, First Aider, Spill Responder).
- Conduct safety orientations, biannual lab inspections, and emergency equipment checks; organise/participate in safety events and training.
- Vet RAs/SOPs, brief staff and students on equipment use and safe practices.
- Maintain EHS360 entries for lab activities, training, and document management; support internal safety audits and NUSSHA audits, including follow-up and rectification.
Core facilities, infrastructure, and fixed assets:
- Support management of ~165 common equipment: scheduling preventive maintenance, coordinating repairs, troubleshooting, and consumables.
- Procure equipment/consumables; liaise with vendors for specialised servicing.
- Draft/review equipment RAs/SOPs; train staff/students on proper usage.
- Administer Facility Booking System (FBS): onboard users, manage access, minimise downtime.
- Work with leads to optimise lab space and set core facility charge rates; communicate updates and billing promptly.
- Coordinate fixed asset tagging/verification with NUSMed FAMU; maintain accurate records and compliance.
- Liaise with cleaning, UCI/Asset Enhancement teams for building repairs and maintenance (e.g., mould, lighting, air-conditioning).
- Assist autoclave operations and drive sustainable lab practices to reduce environmental impact and costs.
IT, events, and publicity support:
- Organise academic seminars, conferences, and workshops: venue selection, logistics, travel/accommodation for speakers, sponsorships (where needed), and budget tracking.
- Provide technical support for in-person, online, and hybrid events.
- Draft RAs/SOPs for events; update website and social media; manage software licences.
- Create publicity collateral for announcements/events; support faculty in integrating technology into educational materials (e.g., interactive videos).
- Coordinate social/festive activities with the Social Committee.
Qualifications
- Diploma in Biomedical Sciences or a related field
- Positive attitude, dependable, and responsible; strong problem-solving skills and willingness to learn new techniques/software
- Able to work independently and collaboratively; strong planning and organisation in a fast-paced environment
- Good interpersonal and communication skills; fluent in English
- General laboratory techniques and equipment handling
- Proficient in Microsoft Office.
- Familiar with EHS360, FBS, and basic LMS/event platforms (or willing to learn).
