Job Description

The successful candidate will work with PI Ben Wainwright in the department of biological sciences at NUS.

Using samples from multiple marine species that have been collected along an approximate 6000km east to west transect from Sumatra to Papua New Guinea, the candidate will work on a project that seeks to explain why the marine ecosystems of the Coral Triangle are so biologically diverse, what facilitates and what restricts gene flow in the region, and finally, how can this information be used to advance marine conservation planning in Southeast Asia.

The main responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to:

  • DNA extraction, PCR, High-throughput DNA sequencing library preparation (Illumina, PacBio, ONT) and the associated techniques.
  • Ensuring and maintaining smooth operation of the laboratory (ordering stocks, maintaining training records etc.)

  • Analyze data and be involved in the production of peer reviewed articles.

The lab has numerous unique marine datasets/samples that candidate is welcome and encouraged to work on and pursue individual research interests.

Qualifications

Skills:

  • Familiar with molecular techniques (e.g., PCR, gel electrophoresis, DNA extraction, DNA Sequencing etc.).
  • Familiarity/proficiency with data analysis in the R environment, ideally using population genetic tools such as APE, STACKS, adegenet etc. and the analysis of microbial amplicon data sets.
  • Independent and self-motivated, and organised with attention to detail.
  • Proficiency in English, both spoken and written, that are essential for communication of findings in scientific and other media.
