Job Description
The Mechanobiology Institute (MBI) at the National University of Singapore (NUS) is a leading multi-disciplinary institute devoted to developing new paradigms for understanding biological functions in health and diseases from the perspective of cell, tissue and organ mechanics/dynamics and mechano-signal transduction. The institute operates on a fully integrated open-lab philosophy, with an extensive infrastructure supported by core facilities dedicated to technology such as state-of-the-art light microscopy, nano- and micro- fabrication, and computing.
We are seeking a skilled Research Assistant to support our advanced research in electron microscopy (EM). The successful candidate will primarily be responsible for sample preparation and preliminary imaging for EM while also gaining exposure to light microscopy techniques. This role offers an excellent opportunity to work with high-resolution electron microscopes and light microscopes, develop expertise in sample preparation for both modalities, and contribute to impactful scientific research.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform sample preparation for electron microscopy, including processes such as fixation, staining, sectioning, embedding, and mounting, tailored for EM imaging
- Assist in the operation and routine maintenance of electron equipment to ensure optimal imaging and accurate data acquisition
- Conduct preliminary imaging and data acquisition for EM
- Manage data entry and maintain detailed documentation of sample preparation protocols, imaging conditions, and experimental results specific to EM
- Collaborate with research teams, contributing technical expertise in sample preparation and imaging techniques for EM microscopy
- Assist with light microscopy imaging and cross-training on light microscopy requirements related to EM sample handling and preparation, as needed. In-house training will be provided
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Materials Science, Engineering, or a related field
- Hands-on experience in electron microscopy sample preparation
- Familiarity with troubleshooting and optimizing sample preparation protocols for electron microscopy
- Basic experience with data acquisition and analysis specific to electron microscopy, with some exposure to light microscopy sample preparation and imaging
- Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to follow established laboratory protocols
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team-oriented environment
- (Preferred) Prior experience in a research or laboratory setting, especially in biomedical or materials sciences
Salary and benefits are commensurable to educational qualifications and working experience of the candidates.
To Apply
Interested candidates should submit a resume, a cover letter detailing their relevant experience in electron and light microscopy, and the contact information for two to three references. This position is ideal for individuals eager to gain specialized experience in microscopy techniques within a dynamic research setting.
We regret that only shortlisted candidates will be notified.
