Job Description
The National University of Singapore’s (NUS) Office of Data & Intelligence (ODI) is the university’s hub for the assimilation, preparation, analysis, visualisation, and reporting of NUS Data. Inside ODI, the Governance and Data Democratisation Team (G&DD) works to make NUS Data more available and useful to the entire NUS Community.
The G&DD Team’s core functions are to:
- Identify sources of useful NUS Data and work with their data stewards, data managers, and NUS IT toward making the data safely and securely usable to a wider audience;
- Curate and repackage NUS Data into standalone data products that can be used with minimal assistance by NUS Researchers and NUS Staff;
- Develop first-generation prototypes of systems and data endpoints through which NUS Researchers and Staff can access and use the NUS Data products; and
- Promote improved data governance across campus by directly interacting with stakeholders, producing reference materials, holding tutorial sessions, and hosting dialogues
The Research Associate will join an inter-disciplinary team to engage in the following activities:
- Quickly transform raw data from NUS systems and external sources into usable data products for use by ODI, NUS Staff, and NUS Researchers;
- Rapidly assemble and pilot novel data transformation, analysis, and visualisation pipelines to enhance the University’s research and operational capabilities;
- Document, improve, and communicate the content and potential uses of NUS Data processes and products to NUS Stakeholders;
- Liaise with NUS Research teams as core stakeholders to provision, update, and enhance NUS Data products, surface new development needs, and communicate recommendations for operational improvements; and
- Assist with the planning, delivery, tracking, and monitoring of ODI’s efforts in implementing the NUS Data Strategy for Researchers.
Qualifications
Interested candidates should have the following qualifications and capabilities:
• Master’s degree in a branch of Data Analytics, Applied Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science or comparable quantitative field;
• Attention to detail and adherence to process when carrying out established workflows
• Excellent knowledge of and experience working with the following scripting/programming languages: Python, R, SQL, and ArcGIS;
• Excellent knowledge of data science techniques and experience working with the following data formats: tabular, multi-level JSON, GIS, and images;
• Excellent written, visual, verbal, and interactive data storytelling skills for English-speaking audiences;
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills, coupled with the ability to articulate ideas with data to experts and non-experts alike; and
• Experience in sourcing, selecting, and applying machine learning techniques and designing algorithms that can be communicated to, and used by, non-experts.
