Job Description

The Mechanobiology Institute (MBI) at the National University of Singapore (NUS) is a leading multi-disciplinary institute devoted to developing new paradigms for understanding biological functions in health and diseases from the perspective of cell, tissue and organ mechanics/dynamics and mechano-signal transduction. The institute operates on a fully integrated open-lab philosophy, with an extensive infrastructure supported by core facilities dedicated to technology such as state-of-the-art light microscopy, nano- and micro- fabrication, and computing.

We are seeking a highly motivated Research Fellow with strong expertise in electron microscopy (EM) to join our multidisciplinary team. The successful candidate will lead EM-based investigations and contribute to the development of advanced imaging protocols. This position offers access to cutting-edge electron and light microscopy platforms, with opportunities to engage in collaborative biomedical research of high impact. This role requires a solid background in biomedical or life sciences research. Applications without relevant experience in biological sample preparation and imaging will not be considered.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, optimize, and execute protocols for the preparation of biological samples for EM, including fixation, staining, embedding, sectioning, and mounting
  • Operate and maintain high-resolution electron microscopes, ensuring reliable imaging and data quality
  • Design and conduct imaging workflows tailored to specific biomedical research questions, including data acquisition, interpretation, and troubleshooting
  • Document protocols, imaging parameters, and results in a systematic and reproducible manner
  • Collaborate with life science researchers to integrate EM into broader experimental designs and contribute to scientific publications and grant applications
  • Support complementary light microscopy techniques when relevant; training will be provided if needed
  • Provide technical guidance or mentorship to junior researchers, including supervision of EM sample preparation and imaging procedures

Qualifications

  • PhD in a relevant field such as Cell Biology, Biomedical Sciences, Biophysics, or related life sciences
  • Demonstrated hands-on experience in biological electron microscopy, particularly in the preparation and imaging of biological specimens
  • Familiarity with biological ultrastructure and experience interpreting EM data in a biomedical context
  • Strong technical knowledge of EM instrumentation and sample processing workflows
  • Ability to work independently, manage multiple projects, and contribute actively to collaborative research
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail, with a commitment to scientific rigor and reproducibility
  • Proven track record of scientific output (e.g. publications, presentations)
  • (Preferred) Prior experience in a core imaging facility or collaborative research environment
  • (Preferred) Experience with light microscopy imaging and correlative workflows (CLEM) will be advantageous
  • (Preferred) Familiarity with image analysis tools and quantitative data processing for microscopy
  • (Preferred) Demonstrated ability to mentor or train junior staff or students

To Apply

Applications should include:

  1. a detailed curriculum vitae including a list of publications
  2. a cover letter outlining relevant experience in biomedical research and electron microscopy
  3. the contact details for two to three professional references

Specific inquiries about this position can be sent via email to Dr. Beghin at mbianne@nus.edu.sg. We regret that only shortlisted candidates will be notified.
