Job Description

The National University of Singapore invites applications for the position of Senior Research Fellow for the project titled “The PROGramme for One Health Antimicrobial RESistance Research in Singapore (PROGRESS)” within the School of Medicine (SoM). PROGRESS is a multidisciplinary research programme focused on addressing antimicrobial resistance (AMR), a complex and growing global health threat with significant health, societal, and economic implications for Singapore and beyond. The successful candidate will contribute to high-impact research aimed at advancing the understanding of AMR and informing strategies to combat this critical public health challenge. The appointment will be made on a one-year contract in the first instance, with the possibility of extension based on performance and project funding.

 

Purpose of the post

The Senior Research Fellow will lead the development and application of advanced mathematical and statistical modelling methods to support clinical and infectious disease research. The role involves conducting high-quality research, contributing to scientific publications and grant applications, supervising juniors and students, and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to advance the programme's research objectives.

Main duties and responsibilities

The responsibilities of the Senior Research Fellow will include leading the development and application of advanced statistical and mathematical models to support clinical and infectious disease research. The successful candidate is expected to work independently while collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to deliver high-quality research outputs and secure competitive research funding.

The Senior Research Fellow will be responsible for:

  • Lead the development and application of compartmental and multi-state Markov models for clinical and epidemiological research, with focus in transmission of antimicrobial resistance.
  • Conducting statistical analyses and model simulations using R.
  • Interpreting modelling results and translating findings into scientific publications.
  • Leading the preparation of manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Leading and contributing to the writing and development of competitive research grant applications.
  • Managing research timeline and deliverables, ensuring quality assurance and timely completion of project milestones
  • Collaborating with clinicians, researchers, and external partners on multidisciplinary research projects.
  • Providing scientific guidance and mentorship to junior researchers and research staff.
  • Presenting research findings at scientific meetings and conferences.
  • Supporting other research-related activities as assigned by the Principal Investigator.

Qualifications

  • PhD in Biostatistics, Statistics, Epidemiology, Mathematics, Data Science, Computer Science, Health Services Research, or a related quantitative discipline.
  • Demonstrated expertise in statistical and mathematical modelling, particularly compartmental models and multi-state Markov models.
  • Proficiency in R programming for statistical analysis, modelling, and data visualization, with demonstrated experience for reproducible research.
  • Strong track record of publications in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Experience in preparing and contributing to competitive research grant applications.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and scientific writing skills.
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a multidisciplinary research team.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to present research findings effectively to diverse audiences.
  • Prior experience in infectious diseases, clinical research, antimicrobial resistance (AMR), One Health, transmission modelling, public health, bioinformatics, proficiency in Linux would be desirable.
